Chief Executive, Gammon Construction Limited

“The whole industry must advance together by embracing transformative change.”

A visionary leader in the construction sector, Thomas Ho On-sing, in his role as the Chief Executive of Gammon Construction Limited, is spearheading the next crucial stage of development for the industry.

Thomas joined Gammon in 1997 - a company which has contributed immensely to Hong Kong’s economy through its construction of landmark buildings and infrastructure facilities since 1958.

As a Hongkonger who has witnessed the boom and gloom of the construction industry in the past few decades, Thomas believes to stay on top of the game, one always has to move one step faster. Throughout the years, experienced professionals like him have adhered to the core principles of ensuring safety and sustainability but the time has come for a major technology upgrade. “Excellence in construction now depends on digital transformation and innovation,” he said.

Under his leadership, Gammon has embarked on a programme of transformative change. The company is taking the lead to adopt cutting-edge technology and new construction methodologies such as Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) for enhanced efficiency.

Thomas thinks that it is important for the whole industry to catch up with the worldwide trend of digitalisation. Through his lobbying efforts, the government has already announced the application of BIM technology in all major projects. He hopes that the private sector will follow suit.

As a pioneer advocating change, Thomas is so receptive to new ideas that he even receives reverse mentoring from a young professional to keep himself up to date with the latest trends.

He believes “people” are at the heart of business. Among the large-scale projects undertaken by Gammon, Thomas cited iSQUARE as a successful example. Not only because they have overcome a lot of challenges during construction, but also because of the trust and long-lasting relationship built with customers.

Thomas is among the earliest graduates of the then Hong Kong Polytechnic’s Higher Diploma in Building Technology and Management. He is also winner of Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award in 2009.

He has much expectation for the younger generation, including PolyU graduates. “We need high-calibre people who understand the complexity and technical challenges of our business. They are crucial for the long-term development of the entire industry.” The ultimate goal is to fulfill the responsibility of building a better future. PolyU shares his vision – “Opening Minds • Shaping the Future” – this is our promise.
