PolyU hosts inaugural webinar of Enlighten@PolyU on “Innovate for a Sustainable Future”

PolyU is pleased to launch "Enlighten@PolyU” series that engages distinguished individuals to share their insights and outlook with the community through theme-based webinars. Jointly hosted by the Alumni Affairs and Development Office and the Institute for Entrepreneurship, the inaugural webinar on the topic of “Innovate for a Sustainable Future” was successfully held on 24 November 2020, attracting over 600 registrations. The event brought together scholar, alumni, student as well as supporters of the University to talk about solutions and practices for promoting sustainable city.   The speakers included Ir Chan Siu Hung, JP, Managing Director, China, CLP Holdings Ltd; Mr Tony Ip, Founder, Tony Ip green Architects Ltd; Ir Dr Conrad Wong Tin Cheung, BBS, JP, Vice Chairman, Yau Lee Holdings Ltd; and Ir Prof. C S Poon, Chair Professor of Sustainable Construction Materials and Head, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, PolyU.  During the webinar, Ir Chan Siu Hung presented the decarbonisation path and energy roadmap of his power company that support low carbon economy in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.  Ir Dr Conrad Wong talked about the adoption of green building technologies and energy optimization solution. Mr Tony Ip showcased projects on sustainable urban development. Ir Prof. C S Poon introduced PolyU’s research on recycling/ upcycling of wastes into asphalt pavement, and the evolution and application of “eco-block”.  Upon answering some in-depth questions raised by the participants, the webinar was concluded by the Moderator Dr Hui Ka Chun, Ex-Chairman, Research Projects Vetting Sub-committee, Environment and Conservation Fund, HKSAR, who resonated with the group that everybody plays a vital role in fostering sustainable future. Collaborative and concerted efforts of the government, businesses, non-profit sector as well as individuals would be essential in pursuit of a green future. PolyU will organize further insightful webinars to introduce University’s expertise in inter-disciplinary research and impactful innovations in solving real-world challenges in the near future.

PolyU Beijing Alumni Network Enlarged Executive Committee Meeting

On 21 November 2020, the Enlarged Executive Committee Meeting in 2020 of PolyU Beijing Alumni Network 1st Executive Committee was successfully held. 15 members joined the meeting including Mr Yang Dongri, President of PolyU Beijing Alumni Network, Mr Ma Zhizhong and Mr Zhang Muhan, Vice Presidents of PolyU Beijing Alumni Network and Ms Li Donghang, representative from Chinese Mainland Affairs Office, PolyU. Mr Yang concluded the fruitful results of the Network in 2020 and set out the Network’s resolution for the coming year in the meeting. Furthermore, having the pandemic situation kept under control, the Network resumes its normal operation gradually.

A team of PolyU researchers led by Professor Tsai Din-Ping, Chair Professor and Head of Department of Electronic and Information Engineering is first in the world in making meta-lens array quantum optical chips tiny, precise and high dimensional, unlocking the full potential of this exciting new technology.

INSPIRE Mentorship Programme

PolyU is pleased to launch INSPIRE, a new university-wide mentorship programme, to enhance students’ holistic education experience, intellectual growth and academic enhancement through a support network of role models and prominent leaders from the PolyU community. The programme is launched in the 2020/2021 academic year. We are pleased to have recruited 110 mentors. They include outstanding alumni, University Fellows, Poly-preneurs, members of the University Council and Court, as well as friends and supporters of PolyU. Our mentors will play the triple roles of an advisor, life coach and role model to the mentees. Mentoring activities such as sharing life experiences, discussing good books, arranging visits or providing job shadowing opportunities at their mentor’s workplace will help broaden students’ horizons and enhance their growth. Through learning from their mentors’ wisdom and experience, we believe our students will be truly inspired!

PolyU Shanghai Alumni Network – 1st Annual General Meeting

The 1st Annual General Meeting of PolyU Shanghai Alumni Network was successfully held on 19 Sep 2020 at Grand Skylight Gardens Hotel, Shanghai. The event received overwhelming response with about 100 guests and alumni attended. President Professor Jin-Guang Teng, Executive Vice President Dr Miranda Lou, Director of Chinese Mainland Affairs  Professor Haitian Lu and the Mainland Alumni Affairs team joined the meeting via Zoom in Hong Kong. Dr Lou addressed a remarks and President Teng delivered a presentation on PolyU’s latest development to the alumni. Mr Cheung Hon Wan, President of PolyU Shanghai Alumni Network concluded the fruitful results of the Network over the past 18 months and set out the Network’s resolution for the coming year. Furthermore, a revised constitution of the Network was passed and adopted by the participated alumni, and an expansion of executive committee members was achieved with additional 12 young alumni elected. The evening was full of highlights. We were honored to have invited our alumni, Mr Niko Wang, Executive Director of CHT Hotel and Tourism School and CEO of Linkedtour.com, Mr Jacky Huen, Founder and CEO of Synet and Dr Louis Lee, Physiotherapist and Lecturer of Physical, mental health and body movement to give us talks on their professions on tourism, job hunt and physiotherapy respectively.
