PolyU Alumni Ambassador Annual Dinner

The PolyU Alumni Ambassador Annual Dinner was held on 6 September 2019.  Witnessed by PolyU senior management, staff and alumni leaders, appointment certificates were presented to 19 graduates coming from various disciplines.  They include members of the Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations Chinese Orchestra and former Student Ambassadors. The event was officiated by Ir Prof. Ben Young, Vice President (Student Affairs) of PolyU, Mr Alex C.B. Wong, President of the Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations (Federation) and Ir Johnny Fan, Convenor of Alumni Ambassador Sub-committee of the Federation. Prof. Young warmly welcomed the Ambassadors and encouraged them to help their alma mater forge closer connections among alumni and contribute to University and alumni initiatives. Highlights of the Dinner included wonderful performance by the members of the Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations Chinese Orchestra and the Alumni Ambassador Band. The PolyU Alumni Ambassadors programme was launched in 2018. To-date, a total of 100 graduates have been appointed as Alumni Ambassadors. They are former student ambassadors, or graduates who have remarkable achievements in their fields (such as sports, arts and culture), and are eager to serve their alma mater.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Beijing Alumni Network Inauguration Ceremony

On 20 July 2019, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) celebrated the establishment of its sixth Alumni Network in the Chinese mainland, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Beijing Alumni Network, with some 220 distinguished guests and alumni at China World Hotel, Beijing. Dr Miranda Lou, PolyU Executive Vice President, and Mr John Leung, Director, Beijing Office, The Government of the HKSAR, officiated at the event. The ceremony was well attended by the VIPs and PolyU alumni. PolyU President Professor Jin-Guang Teng sent a congratulatory message to the Beijing Alumni Network. Dr Miranda Lou, PolyU Executive Vice President, gave  a welcome remark at the celebration dinner and  encouraged alumni to get connected with the University, and all Alumni Networks to cooperate with each other. Representatives from PolyU Pearl River Delta Alumni Network, Shanghai Alumni Network, Tongli Alumni Network from Xi’an, Zhejiang University – PolyU Joint Center Alumni Network from Hangzhou, and Renmin University of China – PolyU Doctor of Management Alumni Network, together with representatives from other Hong Kong universities’ Beijing alumni networks joined in congratulating the PolyU Beijing Alumni Network.

Get Together @ Alumni Atrium - Special Talk on Research in Life Sciences and Guided Tour to University Research Facility in Life Sciences

On 12 July 2019, around 20 PolyU alumni gathered at the Alumni Atrium and joined the special talk on research in life sciences. The talk was followed by a guided tour to the University Research Facility in Life Sciences. The Scientific Officer talked about University’s latest research in life sciences and introduced the advanced equipment in the facility.

MEET and DRINK – FENG alumni

Following last event’s success, the Alumni Affairs and Development Office (AADO) organized the second “Meet and Drink” on 11 July 2019, with the objective to connect alumni from the Faculty of Engineering (FENG). The event brought together around 90 graduates, including University Fellow Mr Chan Kam-lam and recipients of Outstanding PolyU Alumni Awards, Ir Chan Siu-hung, Ir Arthur Lee Kam-hung and Ir Dr Kenneth Ng Kam-wing as well as engineers, managers and entrepreneurs from the fields of automotive, computers and electronics, energy and power, tele-communication, automation and manufacturing. The participants were warmly welcomed by Prof. H.C. Man, Dean of FENG, and were delighted to learn about the latest development of the faculty and have a glimpse of the winning research projects at the 47th Geneva Inventions Expo.  Located in Core A on PolyU campus, the Alumni Atrium is a convenient and versatile venue for exchange and networking. PolyU Shanghai Alumni Network Open Day

PolyU Shanghai Alumni Network Open Day was successfully concluded on 23 June 2019. The participants were able to make new friends, acquire and exchange knowledge for their own personal growth. Everyone felt a strong sense of belonging to the beloved alumni network. Close to 180 alumni, their relatives and friends gathered to have fun at this great event. Activities included topical seminar on entrepreneurship for young alumni, art workshop, sharing of PolyU's latest achievements and development by PolyU Alumni Affairs and Development Office, Tai Chi workshop etc. Also invited were around 90 students from Hong Kong having summer internship in Shanghai and Hangzhou. Alumni shared with them career advice and survival kit in Shanghai, to make their lives easier and most importantly help them be better connected with their brothers and sisters of PolyU. It was the first large-scale activity of Shanghai Alumni Network since its establishment in March. The Open Day has received full support from alumni. We will continue to build more platforms for exchange for Shanghai alumni in the future. We look forward to your continued support!

Gathering Dinner with Alumni Leaders and DALOs

The Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations (Federation) hosted a gathering dinner on 20 June 2019, bringing together alumni leaders and Departmental Alumni Liaison Officers (DALOS) from over 20 alumni associations and academic departments to share best practice and ideas of alumni engagement and development. Mr Alex C B Wong, President of the Federation and Ms Belinda Chow, Director of Alumni Affairs and Development of PolyU presented the “Distinguished Member Alumni Association Awards” to four alumni associations to recognize their efforts and contributions. They include: • Rehabilitation Sciences Alumni Association of PolyU          (Most Successful Membership Recruitment Award (based on growth rate))  • The Hong Kong Community College Alumni Association, PolyU  (Most Successful Membership Recruitment Award (based on growth number))  • The HK PolyU MBA Alumni Association (Most Active Alumni Association Award)  • The Accounting and Finance Graduates Association of PolyU  (Most Outstanding Fund-raiser Award) The alumni leaders and DALOs were encouraged to closely work with the Federation and the Alumni Affairs and Development Office to foster ties among alumni and support the development of PolyU.

2019 Alumni Affairs Development Roundtable Meeting

On 1 June 2019, the first PolyU Alumni Affairs Development Roundtable Meeting, organised by Alumni Affairs and Development Office (AADO), was held at PolyU Shenzhen Research Institute.  Dr Miranda Lou, Executive Vice President, together with alumni representatives from six mainland alumni Networks and Federation of PolyU Alumni Association, attended the meeting to explore the development of alumni affairs of PolyU.  Dr Miranda Lou introduced the latest development and achievement of research and student development of PolyU to alumni representatives.  The representative from Office of Careers and Placement Services (CAPS) conducted a briefing to the alumni representatives, hoping to receive their support for the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) programme. Thereafter, Ms Maggie Chen, CEO of PolyU Base (Shenzhen) Limited and Chief Representative of PolyU Shenzhen Research Institute, led a guided tour for the alumni representatives. The alumni representatives actively shared views and insights about “how alumni networks and associations support the University’s student development" and "how alumni networks and associations contribute to the alma mater and strengthen the bond of the PolyU alumni family”.  The meeting has a fruitful conclusion. The alumni networks and associations will continuously support PolyU and actively explore means for student development, research collaboration, and alumni engagement for the alma mater.  The second PolyU Alumni Affairs Development Roundtable Meeting was tentatively scheduled for the end of 2019 in Beijing.

MEET and DRINK – ITC alumni

The Alumni Affairs and Development Office (AADO) has recently launched a new series of “Meet and Drink” to connect alumni from the same discipline over a casual drinks. The first “Meet and Drink” with alumni of the Institute of Textiles and Clothing (ITC) was held on 31 May 2019. Around 70 ITC graduates, including renowned fashion designers, management of fashion and merchandising companies and entrepreneurs, came together at the Alumni Atrium for networking and exchange. They were delighted to join the exclusive session to the Annual MA Fashion & Textile Design Exhibition, which showcased the works of the new design talents. Pre-retirement Talk Series Building a rich retired life

On 22 May 2019, Mr Lam Chiu Ying, Former Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, was invited to deliver a talk on the topic of “Building a rich retired life”. He talked about his ten-year retirement life and shared his insightful ideas on how to prepare for a fruitful life after retirement. The talk was one of the pre-retirement talk series jointly organised by the Alumni Affairs and Development Office of PolyU and the Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations, attracting over 250 alumni and guests.

“Gathering with Zhe-Li Friends 2019 ” - Opportunity for Hangzhou: Future City Forum

On 18 May 2019, the “2019 Opportunities for Future Communities in Zhejiang" forum was organised by the Zhejiang University – The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Joint Centre Alumni Network and supported by the alumni enterprise Enjoy Town in Guali Enjoy Town. More than 100 alumni and representatives from sister University alumni associations from all over the country attended the forum. Professor Jia Shenghua, Director of IRE programme of Zhejiang University, a number of outstanding IRE alumni, HTM alumni and QM alumni were invited to speak at the forum. Speakers and alumni had lively sharings and discussions, enriching the Forum. “Gathering with Zhe-Li Friends” is a main brand of ZhejiangU-PolyU Joint Centre Alumni Network. It is intended to build a platform for alumni exchange, which does not only strengthen the close ties between alumni and the alma maters, but also promotes the close cooperation among alumni.
