Biography
Prof. Shixin Huang joined the Department of Applied Social Sciences at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2023. Prof. Huang conducts research at the intersection of disability, aging, and care. Her research mission is to promote the well-being and social recognition of formal and family caregivers of socially disadvantaged groups through informing policy, services, and community changes. She has experiences of adopting mixed methods, qualitative, and community-engaged methodologies to study the social and organizational determinants of formal and informal caregivers’ well-being, especially discrimination and stigmatization, as well as access to and utilization of health and social services. Her ongoing research initiatives investigate the sustainable development of the long-term care workforce, as well as family care of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (PWIDD), including the burgeoning roles of parent organizations in innovating social services and policy for families of PWIDD. She is also interested in promoting community-based research on the broadly defined issues of disability justice.
