The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) under the Faculty of Engineering was established on 1 April 2012 (formerly named as Interdisciplinary Division of Biomedical Engineering before 1 October 2017). As an academic division/department in a fully-fledged university, BME exists to advance knowledge and nurture minds, for innovations that will benefit our community, both local and global, and for the development of BME and P&O professions.

Our logo matches what we have become since 2012 under the Faculty of Engineering — Biomedical Engineering, subsuming Prosthetics and Orthotics (P&O) under the Department, serving as an integral facet of modern medicine, healthcare and engineering.

Our design goal was to better match how we look to our values. The underlying concept is to link Engineering to Biomedicine.

Letter M (Medicine) is in shape of a wrench (Engineering) with two snakes (Medicine) / DNA double helix (Biology)

Letter E (Engineering) is in shape of a leaf (Life/Biology)
