‘Premier Award’ of CIOB International Innovation & Research Awards goes to Albert’s Research Team

Bravo! The Premier Award of CIOB International Innovation & Research Awards goes to Ir Prof. Albert Chan and  his brilliant research team.   The team’s award-winning research project ‘Anti-heat Stress Clothing for Construction Workers in Hot & Humid Weather’ has recently won the international award ‘the  Premier  Award  of  CIOB  International Innovation  &  Research(I&R) Awards 2015’ in   the Innovation Achiever’s Award category.   The Innovation Achiever’s Award recognizes outstanding industry-based  innovation  that  has  improved  upon–or  extended  beyond–current  expectations  of  best  practice. The  Award  aims  to  celebrate individual excellence in innovation. Dr. Meng Ni and CEE Colleagues Received Funding Support from Innovation Technology Fund (ITF)

Congratulations to Dr. Meng NI (an Associate Professor at BRE) on his success in winning a big grant on Wastewater-derived  Energy  for  Smart  Towns from  Innovation  Technology  Fund(ITF) as aco-principal investigator (Co-PI). This project involves 7 colleagues including Dr.Henry Lee (CEE, Co-PI), Dr. Meng NI (BRE, Co-PI), Dr. Ben Leu (CEE,Co-I),  Dr. Mark Hsu (CEE,  Co-I),  Prof. XZ Li (CEE, Co-I), Dr. Daniel  Tsang (CEE, Co-I) and Prof. XD Li (CEE,team leader).     Three  innovative  technologies  are  incorporated  in  this  project  for  (1)  removal  of  organics  and nitrogen from sewage; (2) sludge reduction, biog as production, and odor control; and (3)direct conversion  of  biogas  into  electrical  power.    Dr.  Ni  will  carry  out  research  on direct conversion of bio gas into electrical power using solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs).  

Dr. Meng Ni Received Funding Support Under the PROCORE-France/Hong Kong Joint Research Scheme

Congratulations  to  Dr. Meng NI (an Associate Professor at BRE) on his success in winning agrant under the PROCORE-France/Hong  Kong  Joint  Research Scheme in 2015/2016 exercise.This joint research scheme aims to promote research collaboration between Hong Kong and France. Details of the approved project are given below:   RGC Project No.:F-PolyU501/15 Project Title: Development of Novel All Porous Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (AP-SOFC) for Long-term Stable Power Generation Using Hydrocarbon Fuels Funding Period: 2 years France PI/Institution: Prof. FARRUSSENG David/ UMR5256 and University of Lyon 1   In the 2015/2016  exercise, 46 proposals were submitted and 14 proposals  were  supported by both PROCORE-France and  Hong Kong Research Grant Council (RGC). The Hong Kong Polytechnic University submitted 6 proposals and 2 proposals were funded including Dr. Ni’s.     Dr. Meng NI is  currently  an  Associate  Professor  at  Department  of  Building  and  Real  Estate.He  is  the  group  leader  for  Building  Energy  Research  Group  at  BRE  and  the  group  leader  for  Environmental   Energy   Research   Group   at   Research   Institute   for   Sustainable   Urban  Development  (RISUD). Dr.  Ni’s  research  interests  include  renewable  and  sustainable  energy  technologies (i.e. fuel cells and solar energy), numerical heat and mass transfer, building energy  and built environment.  Dr. Ni has published89 papers  in prestigious scientific journals and he  is  the  first  author  or  sole  author  for  most  of  his  publications.    Dr.  Ni’s  publications  havereceived4000  SCI  citations(excluding  self-citations).    His  current  H-index  is  27  (web  of  science).    Dr.  Ni  is  a  member  of  American  Society  for  Mechanical  Engineers  and  The  Electrochemical Society.  He is the  Associate  Editor  for 3 academic journals: (1)Sustainable  Energy  Technologies  and  Assessments(Elsevier);  (2)Science  Bulletin(Springer);  and  (3)Frontiers  in  Environmental  Science.  He is serving as a member of  Editorial  Board  for  9scientific  journals  and  an  active  reviewer  for  over  60  scientific  journals.  He  has  deliveredover20  keynote/invited  lectures  at  international  conferences.    He  has  served  as  a  committee  member for 7 international conferences and a session chair for 5 international conferences.  Dr.Ni received  Young  Scientist  Award  from The Hong Kong Institution of Science in 2007 and  Top   Reviewer   Award  from  Applied   Energy  in   2011.   Recently,   Dr.   Ni   also   received  outstanding   reviewing   awards   from   6   excellent   journals,   including  Applied   Thermal  Engineering,Applied Energy,Energy Conversion and Management,Journal of Power Sources,Chemical Engineering Journal, and  Electrochimica Acta. In the latest ‘QS World University Rankings by Subject’, PolyU ranked 16thin the world and 2ndin Hong Kong for the subject of ‘Architecture/Built Environment’. As one of the contributors to this achievement, we are very delighted that in terms of the two objective measures, ‘Citations per Paper’ and ‘H-index Citations’, the scores are 95.7 and 100, respectively. Again, Congratulations to Ir Prof. Albert Chan and his outstanding research team!   In addition to a range of awards they have received before, their project ‘Anti-heat Stress Clothing for Construction Workers in  Hot &Humid Weather’ won ‘The Local Grand Prize of The Construction Industry Council Innovation Award’. For the team, Ir Prof. Chan received the award from the Chief Executive, Hon. CY Leung in the Government House on 15 December 2015.   The team deserves a series of remarkable achievements for their enduring hard work. BRE UNdergraduate Student Winning OSHC

BRE Undergraduate Student Winning OSHC Best Project Award (2015)

The dissertation report of a 2015 graduate from the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE), Ms Tsui Wing Sum (徐詠琛), was adjudicated as the one of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Best Project Award 2015winners under the category  of  Undergraduate  Degree  Programme  organized  by  the  statutory Occupational Safety and Health Council (OSHC).   The  Award  aimed  at  encouraging  post-secondary  students  in  Hong  Kong  to appreciate the importance of occupational safety and health in their studies. The OSHC offers a maximum of ten awards annually, based on the relevance, quality and originality of the submissions. The graduate received an award certificate and a cash prize  of HK$3,000 during  the OSH  Best Project  Award Prize Presentation Ceremony 2015 launched on 15 December 2015 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.   The  winning  dissertation  report  of  Ms  Tsui,  being  apart-time  graduate  of BSc(Hons) in Surveying programme in 2015, was entitled “A Critical Study of Safety Climate and Safety Performance for Private Sector Construction Projects in Hong Kong”. The winner was supervised by Dr Daniel W.M. Chan(陳煒明博士), Associate Professor of the BRE Department.
