PolyU athletes snatch three bronze for HK team at World University Games

PolyU athletes assisted the Hong Kong delegation to win three medals at the 26th World University Games held in Shenzhen from 12 to 23 August. Dr Patrick Chan, leader of the Hong Kong delegation and Section Head (Physical Education) of PolyU’s Student Affairs Office, was very pleased with the results.

PolyU President Prof. Timothy W. Tong warmly congratulated the student-athletes at a celebration party held on the university campus on 29 August. Mr Pang Chung, Honorary Secretary General of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC), and Mr Kenneth Fok, Honorary Deputy Secretary General of SF&OC and Honorary Manager of Swimming Team, Hong Kong, China Delegation for the World University Games, also attended the event.

PolyU computing student Miss Au Yeung Wai-sum took bronze in Fencing in the Women's Individual Sabre, which was also the territory's first medal at the Games. Miss Angel Wong Hiu-ying, a fresh graduate of our Institute of Textiles and Clothing, snatched another bronze medal in Vaulting.

In addition, PolyU-affiliated Hong Kong Community College student Mr Lai Chun-ho and his team members scored the third bronze medal for the Hong Kong team in the Men’s 4x100 Metre Relay.

Every year, PolyU has admitted talented student athletes through its Outstanding Sportsmen Recommendation Scheme.

PolyU had sent forth a 31-member delegation to participate in the World University Games, including six staff members and graduates who provided physiotherapy services for all the participating athletes. Details>>
