Artist-in-Residence Programme 2015/16

Wucius Wong was born in Guangdong province, China in 1936 and grew up in Hong Kong. After studying art and design in the United States, he worked from 1967 to 1974 as an assistant curator at the City Museum and Art Gallery. In 1970 he was awarded a grant by the John D. Rockefeller III Fund to study and tour in the US for a year. In 1974 Wong joined the Hong Kong Polytechnic as a senior and later principal lecturer in the School of Design and remained with the School until he moved to the US again in 1984. During his ten years’ career at the Polytechnic, Wong made significant contributions to the development of the School of Design, and indeed the design industry of Hong Kong.

Following his second return to Hong Kong in 1996, Wong received an Emeritus Fellowship from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 1998. In 2007 he was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star Medal by the Hong Kong SAR Government, and he was honoured at Asia Society’s Art Gala in 2015. Wucius Wong currently serves as an adjunct professor in the Department of Fine Arts, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and as an adviser to a number of art bodies, including the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government.
