The workshop will introduce you to the method of glass-blowing. You will also be able to learn about the history, development and different techniques of glass-making. Each participant will be able to produce two unique glass pieces by the end of the one-day workshop.

The workshop will provide some general information about calligraphy and introduce the basic skills, as well as some of the special technique of Chinese calligraphy. Using both illustration and demonstration of calligraphy from different periods, the workshop will get you started on calligraphy using Regular Script.

In this workshop you can learn a little about the history and different styles of drawing, and explore the properties of different materials. The basic skills and special techniques of various modes of drawing will be demonstrated, such as linear & value drawing, colour drawing, outdoor sketching, and portrait drawing, as well as the use of watercolour, colour pencil and pastel, thus allowing participants to create their own sketch and painting works.

Yarn-bombing is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre. You will learn how to select suitable materials and tools for knitting and crocheting, and how to form the basis stitches and read patterns. Led by Ms Esther Poon, the first yarn-bomber in Hong Kong, you too will create your own first yarn-bomb!

Harmonica, a special instrument which requires the performers to blow and draw, is a perfect choice for beginners due to the ease to learn and its portability. Melody Star, a beginners’ model with 8 holes and a range of 2 octaves, is one of the easiest educational models of the instrument. Participants can master the instrument and perform a simple tune in a short time.
Further to the success of the pioneering Elementary Chromatic Harmonica Workshop in 2013 by Hong Kong Harmonica Association in the Artist-in-Residence Programme of PolyU featuring King's Harmonica Quintet, the Hong Kong Harmonica Association is delighted to bring you another opportunity. This ten-meeting workshop will provide the satisfaction of music-making, and also give you a solid foundation for further advancement in playing the harmonica.

Join Mr Cheng Po hung, Honorary Advisor to the Hong Kong Museum of History and Hong Kong Heritage Museum on a stroll through the streets of Central and Sheung Wan to experience the early scenery of Hong Kong’s trade and food culture.

Ride the tram from Shek Tong Tsui to Shau Kei Wan with Mr Cheng Po hung, to discover stories and relics from the past in the locations along the way.

On these visits you will be given some background information of the museum collections or cultural heritage objects, and you will be able to see the current treatment projects by these laboratories. There will be an introduction to conservation principles and the various treatment methodologies, as well as instrumental analysis of cultural or conservation material.

The contribution of a stage management team in co-ordinating the different parties is critical to the success of a production. This workshop provides participants with an overview of all aspects of stage management, including basic stage and technical knowledge, operation of the team and materials to be prepared for a production.

This workshop offers the opportunity to learn the role and responsibilities of an art administrator in a drama production, such as fund raising, manpower organization, promotion and ticketing arrangements, even handling copyright issues. The format of the workshop will include valuable input from Programme Manager of Chung Ying Theatre, case studies and group discussions.

Stage lighting can not only provide illumination, but can also tell a story and bring out the relevant emotions of a script through the use of space, colours, changes of different effects and even imagery. This workshop introduces lighting equipment for various stage settings, their features and operations. It will also show participants how a lighting plan is developed and the procedures of lighting rigging, focus and plotting.

Sound designers plan and provide the sound effects according to the plot development of the play. The workshop introduces different sound systems, types of microphones used in a theatre, articulation principles, and basic operation techniques. It will also describe how sound effect and music can be used to bring out the emotions depicted in a script.

Chung Ying Theatre Company
Appropriate costume design, including the use of colorus and materials, is of vital importance to a production so that the costumes accurately reflect the nation, class and era in which the characters live. The workshop introduces the work of a costume designer, from tailoring to actual performance, and how it works hand in hand with setting and lighting. You will also be able to visit the wardrobe of Chung Ying Theatre and have a close look at some real theatrical costumes.

Set designers work out a stage design in consideration of the venue and budget, to visualize the ideas behind a script. The workshop introduces the design process with case studies of different designs, so that participants can better understand and appreciate the design concept and learn how a stage design fits the needs of actors and their performance styles.
