Xiaojing Hutong is a tour de force by the famous Chinese playwright Li Long-yun. First published in 1981, it became an instant theatrical sensation when it premiered at the Beijing People’s Art Theatre. Xiaojing Hutong tells the chequered stories of the ordinary folk living in a little alley in the southern part of Beijing from the 1950s to 1970s, against the backdrop of the most tumultuous and fanatical period in China’s modern history. Amidst the unprecedented socio-political mayhem, those ordinary folk – cobbler, cook, fortune-teller, streetcar-driver, noodle-shop keeper, former prostitute, down-and-out Manchu man – go through trials and tribulations caused by the drastic changes. Though they have tasted the bane of life in one way or another, they never allow their humanity to wear out. Xiaojing Hutong is Li’s caustic critique of the absurdities of the countless political movements that happened in mainland China between the 1950s and 1970s, as well as a heart-wrenching manifestation of his sympathy for the ordinary folk embroiled in the struggle.
