Speaker: Mr Ji Chen
Mr Ji is a young actor from the Hebei Bangzi Theater who specialises in laosheng (old male) roles. He has studied with many renowned Chinese opera artists and has received various accolades in China. In 2014, Mr Ji became a disciple of eminent xiangsheng (crosstalk) artist Guo Degang and adopted the stage name of “Ji Jiuxiao”. He is the only one among Mr Guo’s disciples who made his career in Chinese opera.

The Hebei Bangzi Theater was founded in 1959. In 2013, it was included in the list of “National Key Theatres for the Creation and Performance of Regional Operas”, and it is the only theatre from Hebei to have been selected for inclusion. Since its inception, the theatre has nurtured countless artists and outstanding talents in the Chinese operatic arts. The Hebei Bangzi Theater has created and performed more than 200 plays over the past 50 plus years and received various awards for its endeavours to safeguard and innovate the time-honoured opera form of Hebei Bangzi.
