Beginning the change: a detailed exploration of the principles of good dementia design and their use in the planning and evaluation of environments used by people living with dementia
Highlights
This workshop will provide attendees with a thorough introduction to the principles of dementia design and illustrate their application in a number of case studies. Attendees will be introduced to a number of freely available resources that will enable them to deepen their understanding of designing well for people living with dementia and to make modifications to existing environments.
In addition, how these design principles and tools may be applied to address the challenging physical living environment of RCHEs in Hong Kong will be discussed in an expert panel of design and health professionals. Participants are invited to engage in this interactive dialogue to forge a common vision in tackling this issue locally.

Prof. Richard Fleming, Honorary Professor, University of Wollongong, Australia
Prof. Richard Fleming is a clinical psychologist with over thirty years of experience working with the elderly. As the Regional Coordinator of Mental Health Services in the S.E. Region of N.S.W., he played a crucial role in the deinstitutionalisation of psychiatric services by spearheading the design and development of CADE units. These units were created to replace services provided by psychiatric hospitals and cater specifically to the Confused and Disturbed Elderly. Throughout his career, Fleming has contributed significantly to the field of dementia care, leading projects, delivering training, and publishing papers on various topics such as environmental design, care planning, and assessment of the elderly. In late 2010 he was appointed as a Professorial Fellow in the Faculty of Science Medicine and Health in the University of Wollongong and as Director of the NSW/ACT Dementia Training Study Centre. He has actively been involved in multiple research projects focused on improving the lives of people with dementia.
Dr Calvin W Luk, Project Manager, JCDISI, PolyU
Dr Calvin W Luk is Project Manager-Spatial Team Leader of Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He develops and leads community participatory action research on topics spanning universal accessibility, inclusive design for people with disabilities, therapeutic landscape for dementia, and environmental assessment of care facilities for older persons. He engages extensively in community and urban infrastructure projects, including the government rehabilitation policy plan and occupational safety & health study for aged workers, and district-wide universal accessibility guideline of the West Kowloon Cultural District. With dual profession as architect and specialist clinician in Chinese medicine, Dr. Luk is also an access consultant and the Founding Chairperson of the Association for Universal Accessibility Hong Kong - a multi-disciplinary alliance of architects, medical professionals, academia and social entrepreneurs dedicated to equal and dignified access for all in the built environment.
