Season 17: Making a Community-based Hong Kong - Experience and Experiment of the Community Making in Transitional Housing Projects

ONE FROM HUNDRED THOUSAND Social Innovation Symposium Series

The transitional housing projects launched by the HKSAR Government since 2017 aimed primarily to provide quick and short-term accommodation to alleviate the acute housing shortage problem. With the deep involvement of many NGOs in project formulation and implementation, more than providing decent housing accommodation to the tenants, these projects have created many liveable communities treasured by their tenants. Each transitional housing projects is indeed a social experiment of community making.

This social innovation symposium, would bring together cross-sectoral stakeholders who have contributed to this community making experiment to summarise the experience, share the joys and challenges of the process, and foster conscious and proactive efforts in making liveable communities in Hong Kong.

“Furniture for Our Future” Project Received the DFA Design for Asia Awards 2023 - Merit Award

The tailor-made ergonomic furniture set for children living in subdivided units or other forms of inadequate housing of the “Furniture for Our Future” Project has been awarded the Merit Award of the DFA Design for Asia Awards 2023 by the Hong Kong Design Centre in recognition of its design.

J.C.DISI releases interim findings on the Study on Effective Transitional Housing Delivery in Hong Kong with multiple policy recommendations

J.C.DISI has released the interim findings of its “Study on Effective Transitional Housing Delivery in Hong Kong” (the Study) and its report on policy recommendations. Funded by the Strategic Public Policy Research Funding Scheme, the Study is the first comprehensive study of Hong Kong's transitional housing programme.

“Furniture for Our Future” Project - Best Academic Improvement Award Ceremony

With the generous support of Hongkong Land HOME FUND, the PolyU Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation (J.C.DISI) launched the “Furniture for Our Future” Project to improve the health and well-being, study environment and upward social mobility of children living in subdivided units or other forms of inadequate housing. This cross-sectoral collaboration has designed tailor-made furniture sets that are ergonomic and adjustable in order to fit different spatial setups. To date, the project has provided these furniture sets to over 2,400 children.

To encourage the use of the furniture and recognise academic improvement of the beneficiary children, the team established the "Best Academic Improvement Award". 25 students with the greatest improvement in academic performance were selected to each receive a HK$2,000 book vouchers, and an award ceremony was held at PolyU on 6 July 2024.
