If an impartial observer were to enter your class, what kind of comments do you imagine the teaching-learning environment there would elicit? Would the students conform to contemporary jargon and be “active”? Would the observer describe the class as “student-centered”? What relevant comments might be said of your work as a teacher?
For the facilitator of this workshop, a revelation came one day when he was observing another teacher’s class session. He realized that the teacher was doing all of the “cognitive heavy lifting” in the classroom. This session addresses this issue by offering teachers ways of considering how they prepare and deliver their course materials, how they can increase feedback inside and outside of class, and how they can get their students to do more of the thinking.
