Message from Head

Welcome to the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering (AAE) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), where we are committed to educating students with solid foundation and practical knowledge in aeronautical and aviation engineering to cope with the increasing demand for high-level workforce and professionals in the aviation and aerospace industry in Hong Kong, Greater Bay Area and Asia-Pacific region. Our Department was first established as an interdisciplinary division in July 2016, and has been retitled as a department since 1 April 2021, which enables AAE to become more prominent in the aeronautical and aviation engineering research and education in Hong Kong.

PolyU has had a rich history in engaging in academic research, industrial collaborations, and offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with study streams related to aeronautical and aerospace engineering. AAE takes charge in leading the development of the field of aeronautical and aviation engineering by amalgamating the experts in the Faculty and the industry.  With Senate’s approval, AAE revamped its existing undergraduate programme, and would launch BEng (Hons) Scheme in Aviation Engineering in the 2022-23 academic year.  This Scheme programme will have a clear distinction between aviation engineering and air transport engineering so that students could choose the core knowledge they would like to concentrate in their third-year study. Apart from this, AAE will also launch its first self-financed taught master programme - MSc in Aviation Engineering in the 2022-23 academic year. Offered in mixed mode (1.5-year full-time; 2.5-year part-time; 2.5-year online), this MSc programme will have two specialism study options, viz. Aviation Operations and Management and Aeronautical Engineering. 

The programmes that we offer are unique and cut across the boundaries of engineering and aviation business. Not only do our programmes impart in-depth academic and professional knowledge to students, they are also designed to sharpen the practical, analytical, problem-solving, communication and leadership skills of our graduates. The AAE graduates are specifically trained to apply their state-of-the-art knowledge to serve the aircraft services engineering, aviation information systems, aircraft engineering design and manufacture, airline and airport engineering operations, and the air transportation and logistics industries.

AAE strives to play a leading role to bridge the innovative research and development in the field of aviation and aeronautical with the needs and demand of the aviation and aerospace industry. The close collaboration with the industry, together with the excellent facilities and staff expertise, enable the sustainable growth and competitiveness of our various stakeholders including students and industrial partners.
