RIF Dr Hsu

AAE’s Associate Head Awarded $3.1 Million by the RGC Research Impact Fund Scheme (RIF)

Congratulations to the Associate Head of Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering, Dr Li-Ta HSU for being awarded a supporting fund by the RGC Research Impact Fund 2021/22. The awarded project “Reliable Multiagent Collaborative Global Navigation Satellite System Positioning for Intelligent Transportation Systems” led by Dr Li-ta HSU (AAE) would be supported with a total amount of $3.1 million in 3 years. The preliminary result used to apply for this RIF project is based on the research of an AAE’s research postgraduate student, Mr Guohao ZHANG, who is supervised by Dr Hsu. The modern concepts of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), internet of thing (IoT), digital twin and smart cities, all require accurate and trustworthy Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning.  This RIF awarded project develops a collaborative GNSS positioning algorithm that uses data from a centralized cloud server and that is based on 3D city models, AI, and IoT. The proposed system can play an irreplaceable role to provide accurate, reliable, and absolute position tags in the coming digital era. The team members include, Dr Bing XU from AAE, Prof. Jiannong CAO from COMP, Prof Wu CHEN from LSGI, and Dr Jun ZHANG from ECE/UST. We wish Dr Hsu and his team continued success. Lucy Icking - 4 months in HK

The 4-month adventure at AAE PolyU – from table tennis to urban satellite positioning

Lucy Icking, a German table tennis player of TTV 2015 Seelze, spent four months at the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU AAE) working on urban satellite positioning research from July to November 2021. In an interview by Sport Buzzer, Icking explained that she was attracted by the excellent reputation of PolyU AAE’s urban satellite positioning research team. She then decided to join PolyU’s Research Student Attachment Programme (In-coming Visiting PhD Students), adding a unique adventure to her doctorate in Hong Kong. The research focused on improving the accuracy of the locating system by various ways and means of communicating with the artificial celestial bodies. Apart from her science research, Icking also kept up with her table tennis training in the University’s squad and a club. AAE has been actively engaging in internationalization and we welcome researchers and scholars from around the globe to join our big family.
