85A Alumni Tourcation – A Quest in the Fire Chamber

On 5 November 2022, more than 40 alumni from a wide range of disciplines and graduation years came back to join our campus tour “A Quest in the Fire Chamber”. The event was jointly organised by the Alumni Affairs Office (AAO) and the Alumni Association of Building Services Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (AABSE), and supported by the Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering (BEEE) and the Federation of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Alumni Associations (FHKPUAA). Gathered at the Alumni Atrium, the participants were warmly welcomed by Ms Wanze Li, Interim Director of Alumni Affairs, and Dr Jackie Ng, President of AABSE. Before starting their tour, the group grasped the opportunity to visit the Wall of Pride, where there are valuable historical photos telling the rich heritage of their alma mater. After going to some popular attractions on campus, our alumni were separated into two teams to visit the Fire Engineering Laboratory located at Block Z. The lab technicians and researchers first gave a brief presentation on their research projects, and then carried out two experiments – the simulation of tunnel fire detection and a test of material flammability. The impressive demonstrations drew many questions from the participants and initiated further discussions, making the tour even more fruitful.    As the celebration of PolyU’s 85th Anniversary is reaching a finale, the last “85A Alumni Tourcation” is around the corner. PolyU Mainland Graduates 10-Year Graduation Reunion

On 5 November 2022, a homecoming event was successfully organised for the 2012 Mainland Graduates residing in Hong Kong. A total of 50 alumni visited their alma mater. The event was co-organised by Mainland Development Office and Mainland and International Alumni Sub-committee of Federation of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Alumni Associations (FHKPUAA). Our alumni visited the newly renovated Pao Yue-kong Library, “Walk of Friends” Wall, Block X, footbridge linking Block Z and the Main Campus, Alumni Atrium, as well as the recently unveiled main entrance. During the visit, the alumni participated in the “Shot on Phone Challenge”. Awards on the “Most Beautiful Campus”, the “Most Touching Photo” and the “Most Liked Photo in WeChat Moments” were presented to alumna Yan Jie, alumna Jiang Li and alumnus Li Guangda respectively. Prizes valued at around HK$6,000 were sponsored by Hotel ICON. After the campus tour, President Professor Jin-Guang Teng, together with Executive Vice President Dr Miranda Lou, Director of Mainland Development Professor Lu Haitian, President of FHKPUAA Ir Yau Kwok Fai and Convenor of Mainland and International Alumni Sub-Committee of FHKPUAA Ms Wen Yu, met the alumni in the Theatre Lounge. President Teng and Ms Wen introduced PolyU’s latest development and the work of the Federation. The event was hosted by 2012 graduates Cai Wenting and Gao Yunzhi. Alumni Zhang Quan and Zhang Yangyang, representatives of 2012 graduates, shared their feelings after graduated for 10 years, photos of their fond memories at PolyU and the microfilm created in 2012. The meaningful and memorable event brought the alumni together celebrating PolyU’s 85th Anniversary and reconnecting with the long-lost friends.

PolyU honours eight outstanding alumni

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is pleased to announce that it has bestowed the “Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award 2022” on eight alumni in recognition of their significant achievements in their respective fields as well as their contributions to their alma mater and society. They are fitting testament to PolyU’s accomplishments in nurturing leaders for Hong Kong, the Nation and the world. The Award aims to give recognition to distinguished graduates of PolyU and its forerunners, namely the Government Trade School, Hong Kong Technical College and the Hong Kong Polytechnic. Since its launch in 1996, over 90 graduates have been honoured for great distinction in their chosen fields, active support to their alma mater, as well as impactful contributions to the wider community. This year, achievement categories have been established to celebrate the considerable accomplishments of our alumni in specific areas. Recognition is now also given to outstanding young alumni. Organised at three levels, selection and result announcement of the Department and Faculty/School Awards had been completed prior to the selection of the University Award. The Award Presentation Ceremony will be held in December 2022.

85A Alumni Tourcation - Treasure Hunting in PolyU’s “Technical Library” (Second Tour)

Industrial Centre (IC) is one of the popular spots on campus. The second guided tour to this “Technical Library” was successfully held on 20 October 2022, attended by more than 30 alumni who practise different professions.  The participants met up at the Alumni Atrium, where they signed on a big birthday card for their alma mater, and posed for a group photo in front of the recently installed LED wall. They then visited PolyU Main Entrance, Stephen Cheong Kam Chuen Memorial Plaza, Chan Sui Kau & Chan Lam Moon Chun Square, as well as the Jockey Club Innovation Tower. After entering IC, the group not only enjoyed showcases related to robot workshop, immersive technologies and smart energy, but also got to see in person how the newly launched 3D concrete printing works. They were thrilled to know that the first 3D concrete printer in Hong Kong is housed at PolyU. Touching and examining the products on site was especially intriguing. We always welcome alumni to join our Tourcations and other activities, meeting old friends as well as making new ones at their alma mater. Alumni webinar discusses the hype and potential of NFTs

The Alumni Affairs Office hosted a webinar on “The Hype of NFT – What’s Next?” on 20 October, bringing together four alumni across different fields to share their insights with the PolyU community. Apart from examining the NFT fundamentals, the speakers also discussed the trends and prospects with our audience. The event attracted 440 registrations and was well received by the participants. Mr Dick Fong, our Computing graduate and Venture Leader of McKinsey & Company, set the scene through an introduction to NFTs. Illustrated with vivid examples, his insightful presentation covered the evolution, latest applications and market trends of the digital assets. Mr Keith Wong, our Fashion and Textile graduate and Chairman of APPortfolio, talked about the application of NFTs in the art and design industries. He explained how the world of craftsmanship has changed since then, as well as the creative ways that international brands adopted to capitalise on NFTs. A panel discussion was conducted after the presentations. Joined by the event MC Dr Peter Ng, our Computing graduate and Teaching Fellow, and moderated by our DBA graduate Prof. Dicky Shek, Vice President of the GBA Business School, the session was especially enlightening with many in-depth questions from our audience. All speakers agreed that it is important for us to keep abreast of technology trends so that we would have an edge in the digital world. Dr Ng made the concluding remarks that in the recently announced “Best Universities for Blockchain 2022”, PolyU stands out among 240 universities and is ranked No. 1 in the world. The University has also launched Hong Kong’s first Master of Science in Blockchain Technology this year, followed by the Master of Science in Metaverse Technology in 2023. To help our alumni community stay on top of emerging technology trends, the University and the Alumni Affairs Office are going to organise more programmes and activities. Please stay tuned.

The first MOOC about Data Analytics on edX

This data analytics course takes an interdisciplinary approach to demonstrate the data analytics process in the context of accounting and finance. The growing volume of both structured and unstructured data has pushed forward a more data-driven form of decision-making in accounting and finance. In order to keep up with the Big Data era advancements, accountants and finance professionals need to have a data analyst mindset to excel in their jobs. This course will illustrate different concepts of accounting and finance with the application of data analytics. It will not only help the learners to develop their skills to ask the right questions but also teach them how to master the data and use different tools like Excel and Tableau to analyze the data. In the end, the learners will be able to interpret the results and make their decisions effectively. This course is currently open and will end on 30th January 2023. 2022 National Day Flag-Raising Ceremony and Campus Tour

On 1 October 2022 morning, PolyU held a flag-raising ceremony on campus in celebration of the 73rd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. With a mood of elation on this special occasion, exclusive campus tours were organised subsequently for participating alumni, their families and friends. The participants were divided into two groups, touring around designated spots on campus: PolyU Main Entrance, Alumni Atrium, Stephen Cheong Kam Chuen Memorial Plaza, Pao Yue-kong Library, Jockey Club Innovation Tower, as well as the footbridge connecting the Main Campus with Block Z. They valued the opportunity of returning to their alma mater for such an important ceremony, and were pleased about the various new developments on campus. We welcome all alumni to come back often.
