Master Class Speaker Forum on “Dare to Step outside Your Comfort Zone?”

The Outstanding PolyU Alumni Association (OPAA) hosted its first Master Class Speaker Forum online successfully on 5 February 2021, attracting over 360 registrations of PolyU students and alumni, as well as mentors and mentees of INSPIRE Mentorship Programme. The Forum was presented by two outstanding alumni, Ir Chan Siu-hung, JP, Managing Director -China of CLP Holdings Limited and Mr Elton Ng Chun-ting, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Centre of Rehabilitation & Exercising Specialist. The panel discussion was moderated by the OPAA President, Ir Eric Ma Siu-cheung, GBS, JP, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of NWS Holding Limited.  Ir Chan shared his career adventures and accomplishments, during which he emphasized his “can-do” spirit and introduced the seven attributes of highly effective people. Elton talked about his growing up and showed a video capturing special moments when he conquered Mount Everest and journeys of pushing himself to the next level through his entrepreneur and charity endeavours.  The inspiring talks had drawn many questions from the participants. The Forum was concluded by Ir Ma who shared the same opinion with the speakers. “We should set high goals and develop our potentials, strengths, focuses and perseverance.”  “Opportunities come to those who are well-prepared.” The more we deliberately stretch outside our comfort zone, the more confident we will be able to tackle the new challenges in the ever-changing environment.

The 3rd webinar of “Enlighten@PolyU” series reveals “The Power of Design”

Jointly organized by the Alumni Affairs and Development Office and the Institute for Entrepreneurship, the 3rd webinar of “Enlighten@PolyU” series on the topic of “The Power of Design: Create, Connect, Transcend” was successfully held on 4 February 2021. Distinguished scholar and alumni of the University were invited to discuss how design connect and enrich our lives and help shape a better future. The event attracted over 430 registrations. During the webinar, our renowned alumni designers, including Anthony Lo, Vice President of Exterior Design, Groupe Renault; Alan Yip, Founder & Director, Yip Design Ltd. and Kent Wong, Founder & General Manager, Scopo Creative Strategic Management Co. Ltd., shared their design journeys in different parts of the world.  Anthony shared his car design adventures, uncovering the opportunities and challenges he came across in the automotive industry.  He opined that teamwork was important in the innovation process, and his inspiration came from his travel experience and interaction with people from different cultures and professions.   Alan talked about his diverse experience in product design and how to combine design and productivity. He highlighted the importance of identifying the design positioning to foster sustainable development.  Kent showcased his design projects on furniture and lifestyle products. Sound preparation, interpersonal relationships and collaboration spirit are key factors contributing to his career accomplishment in the Chinese Mainland market.  The webinar was moderated by Prof. Lee Tak Chi, Professor of Practice (Design Practice), School of Design of PolyU. Taking this opportunity, Prof. Lee introduced the establishment of “SD+”, a strategic business unit of PolyU Design, offering professional design-related one-stop consultancy services to the industry.  It would provide a platform to connect alumni and corporates, as well as to support our graduates and startup.

President’s Dialogue with Alumni (the 3rd session)

Further to the two successful sessions held in last December, President Professor Jin-Guang Teng, together with Professor Wing-tak Wong, Deputy President and Provost and Dr Miranda Lou, Executive Vice President, hosted an additional session of “President’s Dialogue with Alumni” on 23 January 2021 (Saturday), to exchange views with the alumni for the development of the University. This session brought together alumni from local, mainland and overseas who had raised many meaningful questions and ideas on diverse topics, covering PolyU’s development in the Greater Bay Area, partnership with other institutions, programme development, innovation and entrepreneurship, support to students and graduates, as well as alumni connection and collaboration. President Teng was pleased to hear many more suggestions from the participating alumni. He looked forward to more interaction with the alumni community in the future. Meanwhile, he encouraged alumni to stay tuned with their alma mater by updating their alumni profiles and viewing Together@PolyU, the e-newsletter from the President.

President’s Dialogue with Alumni

With the new year approaching, President Professor Jin-Guang Teng met with the alumni to share the latest development of PolyU and exchange views and suggestions for the way forward in 2021. Two sessions of “President’s Dialogue with Alumni” were held on 29 and 30 December 2020, attracting 200 alumni from local, mainland and overseas interacted with the President online.  During the presentation, President Teng talked about the strategic goals and progress of PolyU, the response actions for the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the notable achievements of the University in 2020. He also announced that PolyU would be celebrating its 85th anniversary in 2022. He wished to re-connect with as many alumni as possible and welcome them to come back to their alma mater via series of homecoming activities. The cordial dialogues with President Teng were filled with warmness and lively interactions, during which the alumni had raised many good ideas to support their alma mater.  They also expressed great sense of pride about PolyU’s achievements and looked forward to more interactions with the President in future.   The sessions were joined other members of the Central Management Team including Professor Wing-tak Wong, Deputy President and Provost, Dr Miranda Lou, Executive Vice President, Ir Professor Ben Young, Vice President (Student and International Affairs) and Professor Daniel T. L. Shek, Interim Vice President (Research and Innovation).

PolyU organised the 2nd webinar of Enlighten@PolyU on “What is Spatio-temporal intelligence? - BeiDou Satellite Netvigation System and Your Life”

PolyU has launched “Enlighten@PolyU” series in this November, engaging distinguished individuals to share their research, expertise and knowledge with the community. Following the success of the 1st webinar on 24 Nov, PolyU Chinese Mainland Affairs Office hosted the 2nd webinar of the series on 11 Dec 2020. The webinar on the topic of “What is Spatio-temporal intelligence? - BeiDou Satellite Navigation System and your daily life”, having Professor Lu Haitian, Director of Chinese Mainland Affairs and Professor of Law and Finance, School of Accounting and Finance, PolyU as the moderator, we are honoured to have invited Professor Chen Wu, Professor of Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, PolyU as the keynote speaker and Dr Feng Shaojun, Chief Scientist of Qianxun Spatial Intelligence Inc. as guest speaker.                                                                                                                                        The event attracted around 600 registrations, bringing together scholars, alumni, students as well as supporters from the community.  At the same time, PolyU alumni in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen also organised offline gatherings locally and actively interacted with the speakers in the webinar. During the webinar, Professor Chen highlighted the history, current situation and future development of BeiDou Satellite Navigation System, its relationship with our daily life as well as changes it brings to human life. Dr Feng introduced the spatio-temporal intelligence with the audience on its new infrastructure, species and application. Participants showed enormous interest on BeiDou Global Satellite Navigation System and throw some in-depth questions to the speakers. They are excited about the applications the system brings to our daily life. The webinar was concluded by Professor Lu who resonated that BeiDou Global Satellite Navigation System will excel human beings’ ability to explore space and will bring great impact on economic and social development. PolyU will promote the research and application on Global Satellite Navigation System. More webinars of “Enlighten@PolyU” series will be launched in the future, please stay tuned with us.
