Photography Tour in Maoqiao Village on Dragon Boat Festival

On 26 June 2020, the day following Dragon Boat Festival, PolyU Shanghai Alumni Network organised a photography activity in Huating, Jiading, Shanghai. Located at the Northeast of Shanghai, Huating is not only a place with long history, but is also famous for its natural beauty. This activity was proposed and arranged by our alumni and was also the 1st event organised by Shanghai Alumni Network after the epidemic. It was a beautifully sunny day, over 20 alumni and family members arrived at Maoqiao Village and enjoyed the stunning natural scenery, by horse-riding, fruit picking and traditional wine and sauce production workshop. Strolling along the countryside, our alumni captured the beauty of nature, shared photographic tips, and most importantly, fostered the relationship among alumni. Take a guess on who the winner is!

Reusable Face Shields designed by PolyU

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought great challenges to all walks of life.  At PolyU, we have been closely monitoring the situation and have devised plans to help contain the spread of the coronavirus and seek sustainable measures to cope with the situation. In February 2020, we designed and started producing disposable face shields for the Hospital Authority in order to alleviate the immediate need for protective gear amongst frontline medical professionals.  In April, we launched two new reusable face shields, which provide enhanced protection to those in need and help contain the spread of the coronavirus in the community.   The “General Use Face Shield” (General Version) is suitable for everyone; while the “Extra Protection Face Shield” (Enhanced Version) offers broader protection by covering the forehead and hair.   We are delighted to announce that PolyU alumni can order the face shields online now!

Overcoming difficult times in solidarity

The COVID-19 pandemic has been seriously impacting all businesses and all walks of life.  At PolyU, we are particularly concerned with the financial challenges faced by some of our students and their families due to the current situation. Therefore, we have decided to establish the PolyU COVID-19 Student Support Fund to provide support to our students who are greatly affected by COVID-19. The Fund aims to relieve the financial hardship of PolyU students in need; strengthen the spirit of solidarity of the PolyU community to tide over the difficult times; and enhance the resilience of our students.  To kick-start the Fund, the Management team (including the President, Deputy President and Provost, Executive Vice President and all Vice Presidents) will donate 10% of our salaries over a period of 12 months from April 2020. We also appeal to you, our alumni, other members of the PolyU community and our supporters to contribute to this meaningful cause.  To support and find out more about the PolyU COVID-19 Student Support Fund, please click the Fund page.  We believe that mutual support is the key to overcoming this public health crisis. In addition to extending care and concern to our students, it is heartening to see that our staff, students and alumni have also extended their care to the wider community. Our researchers have supported frontline medical professionals by developing specially-designed 3D-printed face shields for their enhanced protection, and they have also innovated the world’s most comprehensive automated multiplex diagnostic system to provide quick virus testing. Do visit the dedicated section on the PolyU website: Combat COVID-19 in concert 凝心聚力 携手抗疫 to know more about how the University community has been contributing to the global fight against the pandemic. You will find that in the face of the challenges, PolyU members have indeed lived up to the spirit of the University’s motto: “To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind”.

Alumni Salon: The Impact and Response to COVID-19

The entire mankind  is under the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic!  While the virus infection surged in foreign countries, our fight-against the pandemic showed satisfactory progress with the concerted efforts of the country’s medical team and the full support of the community. The pandemic has dealt an unprecedented blow to the economies of almost all industries across the world. We therefore organised this alumni sharing to show the impact of COVID-19 on enterprises and suggest ways for alumni to deal with the possibly prolonged difficult period. The Pearl River Delta Alumni Network invited three alumni guests from the sectors of supply chain, online education, retail and equity investment to share their views on how to cope with the tough situation.
