APSS Scholars Awarded by Public Policy Research Funding Scheme (Special Round)

              The Department is pleased to announce that 4 projects led by scholars of APSS: Prof. Daniel LAI Wing Leung, Dr LIN Li, Dr Herman LO Hay Ming and Dr. YU Lu have been granted under the Public Policy Research (PPR) Funding Scheme (Special Round), launched by the Government’s Policy Innovation and Co-ordination Office. Details of the projects are as follows: Title of Project Principal Investigator Effects of Social and Political Unrests on Mental Health of Older People in Hong Kong Prof. Daniel LAI Wing Leung The Influences of Social Mobility Beliefs on Social-Political Attitudes among Hong Kong College Students Dr LIN Li A Stepped-Care, Multi-disciplinary, Evidence-based Approach to Strengthen Adolescence and Family Well-being after Social Unrest Dr Herman LO Hay Ming Hong Kong Junior Secondary School Students' Attitudes Towards and Engagement in Political Activities Involving Violence and Destruction: The Associated Individual, Family, and School Factors from a Positive Youth Development Perspective Dr YU Lu PPR Funding Scheme, together with the Strategic Public Policy Research (SPPR) Funding Scheme, are the government-subsidised funding schemes which aim to promote public policy research in Hong Kong. The special round of the Funding, launched in November 2019, is to support research studies that are related to social incidents, as well as important political, economic, cultural and societal issues relating to the deep-seated problems of society. Five PolyU-led projects were awarded a total of HK$2.08 million funding, and four of these projects are led by academics from the APSS, the remaining one is led by the Department of English.

Congratulations to Dr. Lu YU for Winning Fulbright-RGC Hong Kong Senior Research Scholar Award

Dr. Lu YU, Associate Professor of Department of Applied Social Sciences, has been awarded Fulbright–RGC Hong Kong Senior Research Scholar Award by the U.S. government. The award will sponsor her research project in the U.S. for 10 months (https://www.ugc.edu.hk/eng/rgc/funded_research/funding_results/fhksp2021.html). During her Fulbright fellowship at the University of Chicago in the academic year 2020/21, Dr. YU will conduct a research project entitled “Preventing Youth Violence in Hong Kong: Gaining Experiences from Evidence-Based Best Practices in the United States”. Dr. Yu said that violence among youth is a major public health concern worldwide, and its importance for Hong Kong is growing. The research would contribute to preventing youth violence in Hong Kong and other Chinese contexts. Dr. YU expressed her thanks to the Department of Applied Social Sciences for the support in her application. The Fulbright–RGC Hong Kong Senior Research Scholar Award Programme is a flagship international education exchange programme supported by the U.S. Department of State and partner countries around the world. Funded by the Research Grants Council, two awards will be on offer annually for Hong Kong scholars as Fulbright visiting scholars affiliated with American universities and research institutes. The Programme aims to support senior Hong Kong scholars to undertake research activities at American universities and research institutes.

Congratulations to Mr Andy FUNG Hong Wang for being awarded Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship 2019/20

                          Mr Andy FUNG Hong Wang, PhD student at PolyU APSS, is honoured with the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship for Disabled Students 2019/20. The Council administrates both fellowship and scholarship schemes for disabled students. The fellowship is offered to outstanding full-time students with special educational needs and/or mental health needs pursuing UGC-funded research postgraduate studies in Hong Kong, in recognition of their academic excellence, leadership potential, language proficiency and research achievement. Andy is the only awardee in this academic year.

APSS Scholars Awarded K.C. Wong Belt and Road Visiting Fellowship Scheme 2019

              Dr. Crystal Kwan, Assistant Professor of APSS and Dr. Timothy Sim, Associate Professor of APSS, received awards from the PolyU K.C. Wong Belt and Road (B&R) Visiting Fellowship Scheme 2019. The Fellowship Scheme aims to strengthen the tie between PolyU and the B&R higher education institutions, and provides up to 10 fellowships each year to PolyU scholars. It encourages awardees to carry out B&R related studies, and supports education development in B&R countries, as well as embarks on research collaboration with the Belt and Road scholars. Dr. Kwan and Dr. Sim gratefully acknowledges the support of the K.C. Wong Education Foundation. Dr. Kwan will visit the University of the Philippines while Dr. Sim will visit the University of Pretoria to carry out B&R related research and educational activities within the academic year of 2019/20.

Congratulations to Prof. Sylvia Chen for Receiving International Fellowship

                Prof. Sylvia Xiaohua Chen, Associate Dean of PolyU's  Faculty of Health and Social Sciences and Professor of Department of Applied Social Sciences, has been elected as a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science (APS), previously the American Psychological Society. An international body, APS awards fellowships to recognize members who have made sustained outstanding contributions to the science of psychology.   恭賀陳曉華教授獲授國際院士榮銜 理大醫療及社會科學院副院長暨應用社會科學系陳曉華教授獲美國心理科學學會頒授院士榮銜。該學會為一所國際組織,透過頒發院士榮銜表彰持續對心理科學發展建樹良多的會員。
