Biography

Dr Shixin Huang joined the Department of Applied Social Sciences at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2023. Before that, she was a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Policy at Lingnan University from 2022 to 2023. With a decade of practice and research experience in disability justice and community development in China, Dr Huang conducts research at the intersection of disability, aging, and care. Her research mission is to promote the well-being of formal and family caregivers of socially disadvantaged groups, particularly people with disabilities and older adults, as well as those they care for. Currently, Dr Huang’s ongoing research focuses on family care of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (PWIDD), including the burgeoning roles of parents’ organizations in innovating social services and policy for families of PWIDD; the care work of para-professional workers in the long-term care sector. She is also interested in promoting community-based research on the broadly defined issues of disability justice.
