Scholars under the Hong Kong Scholar Scheme expressed their appreciation to CEE

New equipment on board

The newly arrived Nanoindenter is a nanomechanical testing instrument that delivers quantitative mechanical and tribological characterization at nanoscale.  It meets specific research needs, from soft polymers to concrete and steel. Young’s modulus, hardness, fracture toughness and other mechanical properties can be measured via nanoindentation, and wear properties of various materials can also be tested. In-situ SPM imaging also allows the observation of post-test deformation behaviour. Test results of the hydration of one of the cement compounds, C3S, are shown in the left. The modulus and hardness measurements can conclude that the cement hydration products consist of different phases. Thus, quantifications of the changes with time can be made for better understanding of the effect of using, for example seawater as the mixing water, on the hydration mechanism. The Nanoindenter is now installed in the Light Structures Laboratory.
