Established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2009, the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong's universities. The Fellowship provides an annual stipend of HK$331,200 and a yearly conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,800 for each successful awardee for a period up to three years.
In addition to HKPFS award, PolyU and the Department provide the following to the awardees:
- The fourth-year stipend and travel allowance with the same provision for awardees with a Bachelor's degree only (normal study period will be four years instead of three years);
- Tuition waiver scholarships for the entire normal study period;
- Cash award of HK$40,000 in the first year, and HK$20,000 from the second year to end of normal study period;
- Guaranteed hall accommodation for two years; and
- Sponsorship for exchange in the top US and European universities for 6 to 12 months.
