Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU Department of Electrical Engineering 2023

The enhanced three-level Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award (OPAA) introduced last year has achieved great success. The Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) is pleased to announce that the new round of departmental OPAA 2023 is now calling for nominations until 31 March 2023 (Friday). The departmental OPAA aims to publicly recognise outstanding graduates of EE for their professional achievements and significant contributions to the community and their alma mater. The departmental awardees will be officially honoured by the department and be nominated for the Faculty Awards or above. Award Categories and Selection Criteria There are four achievement categories, namely “Professional Achievement”, “Entrepreneurial Achievement”, “Scholarly Achievement” and “Community Service Achievement”. Selection is based on the nominee’s accomplishments in his/ her personal achievements in the field, contributions to the community, and support and contributions to PolyU. Special recognition to young alumni awardees in the award category is added. A candidate who is aged under 40 by the end of the award year can be considered under the Outstanding PolyU Young Alumni stream. The Award will be conducted at three levels: Department level, Faculty/School level and University level. The recipients of the Department Award will be nominated for the Faculty Award. All Faculty/School awardees will be considered for the University Award. Eligibility The nominated candidate must be a bona fide graduate who has successfully completed the full-time or part-time programme offered by PolyU (or its forerunners: Hong Kong Government Trade School, Hong Kong Technical College, Hong Kong Polytechnic; and its constituent units: School of Professional Education & Executive Development and Hong Kong Community College) which led to academic award accredited by the respective Institution.   The proposer can be a PolyU graduate, Honorary Graduate, University Fellow, PolyU staff, current PolyU Council and Court member and current Advisory Committee member. There is no limit to the number of nominations to be submitted by each proposer. However, the proposer cannot be the candidate himself/ herself or a direct relative of the candidate.   Nomination and Selection Schedule The nomination form could be downloaded here. Please return the completed form to eenotice@polyu.edu.hk with all required supplementary documents on or before 31 March 2023. Panel of Judges and Result Announcement Selection for Department Award will be conducted by end of April 2023. A panel of judges, comprising both internal and external members, will be formed to examine the nominations and assess candidates’ qualifications and performance for the awards. Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU Department of Electronic and Information Engineering 2023 is open for nominations

The Department of Electronic and Information Engineering (EIE) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, formerly known as the Department of Electronic Engineering, was established in 1974. Since then, the Department pursues a wide range of teaching and research activities in numerous fields of electronic and information engineering. We nurture generations of graduates who devote their time and effort for the betterment of society. To recognize outstanding graduates of EIE for their professional, entrepreneurial and scholarly achievements, as well as their contributions to the community, the Department is inviting nominations for the Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU Department of Electronic and Information Engineering for 2023. IEEE HITC 2022 Award for Excellence in Hyper-Intelligence (Early Career Researchers)

Dr Wenjuan Li won the IEEE HITC 2022 Award for Excellence in Hyper-Intelligence (Early Career Researchers) presented by the IEEE Hyper-Intelligence Technical Committee (HITC) for her contributions on hyper-intelligent and distributed system security! HITC is a technical committee within the IEEE Systems Council, which aims at fostering research and education in hyper-intelligent systems with applications. This award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding, influential, and potentially long-lasting contributions in the field of hyper-intelligent systems. The candidates are within 5 years of receiving their PhD degree as of 1st January of the year of the award typically.

eLearning Forum Asia 2022 Exemplary Teaching and Learning Silver Award

Dr Pauli Lai won the eLearning Forum Asia 2022 Exemplary Teaching and Learning Silver Award for recognizing her initiative on the development of online coding platform! Established in 2019, the eLearning Forum Asia Awards abide to the mission of eLearning Forum Asia to promote the nexus between education and technology, through facilitating the exchange of challenges and successes experienced by different institutions. Dr Lai and her project team members, Mr Ivan Lau and Mr Richard Pang, developed an online coding platform, Codatus, which allows students to use a browser to work on the coding exercises. Codatus allows teachers to customize the question sets and answers for auto-grading. The platform also features an issue tracking function to let students tie their enquiries to the relevant questions and previous attempt records. It also provides a collaborative code-writing feature to pair up students for collaborative editing. This winning project is innovative in reinventing the process of practical coding classes supported by Codatus's unique features. Students also find the platform useful and convenient to facilitate their learning.

Gold Award of Tertiary Institution Category in Hong Kong Cyber Security New Generation Capture the Flag Challenge 2022

A team of PolyU students including Ho Chun Yin (BSc in INS student), Ho Ka Yui (BSc in INS student), Leung Hon Lam (BSc in INS student) and Sham Wing Chung (COMP student) won the Gold Award of Tertiary Institution Category in the Hong Kong Cyber Security New Generation Capture the Flag Challenge 2022! The competition was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and its Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre (HKCERT) for about 1200 players in 434 teams to enhance the cyber security awareness of young people in Hong Kong in November 2022. Coached by Dr Haibo Hu and our MPhil student, Mr Hopkins Kong, the winning team applied creative thinking and cyber security skills to solve 47 questions within 48 hours, enabling them to acquire cyber security knowledge such as cryptography, programming concept and forensics in this challenge.

Mr Sit Wing Hang Alfred , GBS, JP, as an Adjunct Professor of EE

Mr Alfred Sit Wing-hang, GBS, JP, is currently an Adjunct Professor. He received the Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering in 1981 and the Associateship in Electrical Engineering in 1982 at The Hong Kong Polytechnic. Mr Sit has long been dedicated to public services and has been Secretary for Innovation and Technology in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region since April 2020. He joined the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) in 1984 and climbed the hierarchal ladder to Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services in 2017. All along, Mr Sit has been an ardent advocate of adopting innovative technologies within the public framework and has spearheaded the E&M InnoPortal at EMSD to forge a close connection between government units and the innovation and technology sector, so as to weave advanced, tech-centric and future-proof solutions into the organisational fabric.  Since the outbreak of COVID-19, he has been actively promoting R&D by encouraging the adoption of homegrown technologies, in particular to tackle the pandemic, and the provision of hardware and software to enable e-business and e-learning. Mr Sit is also passionate about serving his professional community and alma mater. He was President of The Hong Kong Institute of Facility Management, and Chairman of the Biomedical Division of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.  He was Chairman of PolyU’s Departmental Advisory Committee of the Department of Electrical Engineering.

Second Prize Award of Huawei ICT Competition Hong Kong SAR 2022-2023

Supervised by Dr Lawrence Cheung, a team of PolyU students, including Au-Yeung Chak Him (EIE student), Bi Jingyun (EIE student) and Li Jingyu (AMA student), won the Second Prize Award of the Huawei ICT Competition Hong Kong SAR 2022-2023 in December 2022. The Huawei ICT Competition is a competitive ICT talent exchange event developed by the Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. for global college students with the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer of the HKSAR Government as the advisor. The competition attracted more than 600 participants this year. It aims to promote the healthy development of the ICT talent ecosystem and support the integration of industry and education. The content of the competition includes cloud track and IT technologies such as big data, storage and AI. It provides an excellent platform to enrich the ICT knowledge of university students, and nurture innovation and technology talent to sustain the long-term development of Hong Kong.

Champion of PwC HackaDay CTF Competition

Supervised by Dr Haibo Hu, the PolyU Capture The Flag (CTF) Team comprised of Sham Wing Chung (COMP student), Leung Hon Lam (BSc in INS student), Ho Ka Yui (BSc in INS student) and Kwan Chun Kit (BSc in IMT student), won the Champion of the PwC HackaDay CTF Competition on 24 November 2022. HackaDay is the PwC Hong Kong’s annual flagship event which holds competitions for undergraduate students from Hong Kong and Macau to understand more about cybersecurity and cloud ecosystems. It aims to raise students’ competency level and prepare them for a meaningful career in cybersecurity with the CTF Competition. The contestants were required to expose themselves to real-life scenarios during this competition. The contest provided a centralized platform for future cybersecurity talents to learn, hack and co-secure the environment and society.
