Summary

In this talk I’ll discuss the emerging paradigm of digital chemistry R&D, based on access to data, low cost lab automation and integrated computing/AI infrastructure. Access to such facilities creates opportunities for new type of chemistry research – holistic approach to challenging problems such as design of circular chemical supply chains, or integration of chemical manufacturing with renewable energy and low-carbon mobility. The system-level problems of chemistry are beginning to approach the level of complexity required for addressing the challenge of developing sustainable technology.

Prof. Alexei Lapkin

Professor
Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology,
University of Cambridge

Alexei Lapkin studied chemistry and specialised in membrane gas separation for his Masters thesis. He then shifted to chemical reaction engineering and completed his PhD at the University of Bath (UK) in membrane catalysis. He joined the University of Bath as a Lecturer in 2000. In 2009 he was appointed a Professor of Engineering at the University of Warwick and in 2013 he was elected to his current position of Professor of Sustainable Reaction Engineering at the University of Cambridge. He is also an adjunct professor at National University of Singapore. He runs multiple research programmes in Singapore under the umbrella of Cambridge Centre for Advanced Research and Education in Singapore (CARES). In recent years graduates from his group launched four start-ups.
