Brief Biosketch

Sai-Ho Chung (Nick), Ph.D., is an Associate Professor and Associate Head (also Associate Director of studies, IGDS) of the Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He also serves as the Departmental Research Committee chairman. He obtained his MPhil. and Ph.D. from the University of Hong Kong in 2004 and 2007 respectively. He joined in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, as a Lecturer in 2007 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2019 and joined as the Associate Director of the Integrated Graduate Development Scheme Unit since 2018.

His research interests are in operations research (optimization and machine learning) in the field of aviation, logistics, supply chain management, manufacturing, and container terminal. He has published over 150 SCI journal papers, and his publications appear in Production and Operations Management, Transportation Research Part B/C/E, Decision Sciences, Risk Analysis, European Journal of Operational Research, IEEE (SMC, TIE, EM, SJ), Decision Support Systems, International Journal of Production Economics, International Journal of Production Research, Computers and Operations Research, etc. Among the publications, the paper published in Risk Analysis was selected as the top paper by Risk Analysis, the media of the month by Society for Risk Analysis, and the top 0.1 paper in Almetric. In Google Scholar, he currently has over 9,000 citations with H-index 45. He serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetic: Systems, and Editorial Board members in Transportation Research Part E, Mathematics, and International Journal of Inventory Research. He also edited several special issues in SCI journals, e.g., TRE, IJPR, ANOR, IMDS.

He has obtained 2 patents and numerous research funding with a total amount of over HK$15M, including General Research Fund (GRF), Innovation Technologies Funds (ITF), PROCORE – France/Hong Kong Join Research Scheme, Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme, Departmental Research grants, etc. He has successfully supervised over 20 PhD students, and the PhD graduated are now working in different universities as faculty members or research personnels over the world.
