3-year Direct-entry PhD
Admittees’ Qualification: A Master’s degree with research component and a Bachelor’s degree
Normal Study Period: 3 years
Maximum Study Period: 5 years
Credit Requirements & Study Timeline
* i. All returning RPg students will be allowed to transfer the grade obtained in one Academic Integrity and Ethics (AIE) subject to the new RPg programme regardless of its level. However, credit transfer will not be granted to returning students admitted in or after 2024/25 for the credit earned from the subject “HTI6081 Ethics: Research, Professional & Personal Perspectives”.
ii. 3 yr PhD students are allowed to apply to transfer one credit from their previous attendance at seminars.
#i. Departments can integrate the two elements as long as the Confirmation of Registration is successfully carried out by the end of the first five semesters/terms as required by the University.
ii. Students who fail the compulsory PhD Qualification Exam will be required to exit with the MPhil degree (subject to meeting all the relevant MPhil requirements).
4-year Direct-entry PhD
Admittees’ Qualification: A Bachelor’s degree OR Master’s degree without research component and a Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours (or equivalent)
Normal Study Period: 4 years
Maximum Study Period: 6 years
Credit Requirements & Study Timeline

Note: Students who fail the PhD Qualification Exam both times can exit with a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree (subject to meeting all the relevant requirements for the MPhil degree).

Note: GMAT or GRE results are required. Applicants with an overall score below 600 for GMAT or 575 for GMAT Focus Edition; or a GRE score below 150 for verbal reasoning component and/or below 162 for quantitative reasoning component must have a strong academic record and/or extensive experience in their interested field to demonstrate their research potential. You are not required to submit the GMAT/GRE result at the time of application. However, you must fulfil the requirement before programme registration.
