Summary

This presentation will discuss the advancements and challenges in precision GNSS technology development driven by mass-market applications, an area with strong market demands and increasing applications. The evolution of precision GNSS technologies and some research efforts at University of Calgary will be demonstrated including new precision GNSS approach designed for mass-market applications, precision GNSS performance with low-cost receivers, and the latest progress in precise GNSS positioning with smartphones in challenging environments.

Dr. Yang Gao is a Professor and Associate Head in Research & Graduate Studies in the Department of Geomatics Engineering at the University of Calgary, Canada. His research has been focused on high-precision global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and their integration with other enabling sensors. He has disseminated his knowledge through hundreds of technical publications, mentorship of scores of graduate students and active technology transfer activities. His academic and leadership contributions have been recognized by major national and international awards and by his election to fellowships of the International Association of Geodesy, the US Institute of Navigation, the UK Royal Institute of Navigation, the Engineering Institute of Canada, and recently the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He is currently the President-Elect of the Canadian Institute of Geomatics.
