2019
PolyU’s developed “Camera Pointing System” and its “topographic mapping and geomorphological analysis technique in landing site characterization” contributed to the historic landing of Chang’e-4 mission on the far side of the Moon.
PolyU is strengthening its research collaboration with institutions in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) through the establishment of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratory of Environmental Pollution Processes and Control. The Centre engages in large-scale collaborative research to address pressing environmental issues in the GBA.
PolyU develops a platform for experts in the GBA to work together to tackle major energy challenges. The establishment of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratory for Photonic-Thermal-Electrical Energy Materials and Devices with research focus on solar cells, fuel cells, thermal energy conversion and storage, and advanced batteries for energy storage.
2018
Jointly initiated by PolyU and Shenzhen University, GBA I3 aims to join hands with global partners to develop innovation and technology talents through open innovation, education programmes, and related start-up supports.
2017
The Silk Road International School of Engineering jointly set up by PolyU and Xi’an Jiaotong University launched its first university-industry collaborative project to nurture senior executives in the power and energy sector.
PolyU and Southwest Jiaotong University jointly founded the “Join Innovation Centre for Rail Transit Safety Monitoring Technology” to enhance structural health monitoring, fault diagnosis and prognosis for China’s high-speed rail network.
2016
PolyU has joined hands with 134 universities from 34 countries and regions to form the “University Alliance of the Silk Road” (UASR) was formed to promote academic collaborations and to foster student exchanges among members.
2015
Two Hong Kong Branches of Chinese National Engineering Research Centres were set up at PolyU to advance technologies in rail-transit engineering and steel structural engineering .
2013
The Beijing Liaison Office and the Shanghai Liaison Office were established and located at Peking University and Tongji University respectively.
The Camera Pointing System co-developed by PolyU and China Academy of Space Technology successfully joined the Chang’e-3 lunar mission.
2012
PolyU’s developed the Structural Health Monitoring System were installed in the headquarters of Shenzhen Stock Exchange (2012), Sutong Bridge (2007) and Guangzhou Tower (2010).
2011
Shenzhen Base was opened in the Nanshan District’s High Tech Industrial Park.
2010
In response to the Wenchuan earthquake, the “Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction” was established with Sichuan University. It is the first university in China to conduct research on disaster prevention, mitigation and post disaster reconstruction.
The Partner State Key Laboratory of Chirosciences was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) to be established in PolyU.
The Partner State Key Laboratory of Ultraprecision Machining Technology (PSKLUMT) was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) to be established in PolyU.
2008
As a collaborative research partner for the Beijing Olympics, PolyU assisted the National Olympic Committee in training, scientific research and medical rehabilitation for athletes, preparing them for the Olympic.
2007
PolyU entered into an agreement with Peking University to establish a joint social work research centre on the mainland and offer a Master of Social Work programme to nurture talents.
2006
Chinese Vice–President Zeng Qinghong sets foot on PolyU campus for the first time.
PolyU entered into an agreement with the Lunar Exploration Centre of the Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense to initiate exchange and cooperation in training and scientific research.
2005
The State Key Laboratory of Chinese Medicine and Molecular Pharmacology (Incubation), Shenzhen (SKL Incubation) under The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Shenzhen Research Institute is a laboratory that focuses on modernized Chinese medicine research.
2002
“The Xi’an Tongli International College”, PolyU’s third mainland outpost, was opened and operated with Xian Jiaotong University for supporting the nation’s western development.
2000
“The Hong Kong Young Industrial Council Executive Training Centre”, PolyU’s second mainland outpost, was established under Shenzhen Research Institute.
1998
Admitted the first batch mainland students for undergraduate studies.
1997
“The International Executive Development Centre”, PolyU’s first mainland outpost was opened and operated with Zhejiang University in Hangzhou.
The first biennial Bauhinia Cup Outstanding Entrepreneur Awards Scheme to honour distinguished mainland and local entrepreneurs. A total of 155 outstanding mainland entrepreneurs have won the award.
1995
Establish the “International Strategic Technology Alliance” with 14 top universities from the mainland to promote applied research collaboration and technology transfer.

More than 80 outstanding scholars have visited PolyU since the annual Distinguished Chinese Visiting Scholars Scheme was held.
1978
A delegation led by the Director Dr Keith Legg paid a visit to Xi’an Jiaotong University marked the first official visit of a Hong Kong academic institution to the mainland.
