PolyU and Huizhou Daya Bay sign a cooperation agreement to establish joint technology and innovation research institute

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Huizhou Municipal Government, together with the Daya Bay Economic and Technological Development Zone (Daya Bay Development Zone), have entered into a cooperation agreement for the joint establishment of the PolyU-Daya Bay Technology and Innovation Research Institute with a signing ceremony held on campus on 13 May. Professor Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU, introduced the University’s latest developments and its strategic goals for future expansion in mainland China to the visiting Huizhou delegation. He added that PolyU is committed to promoting technology and innovation, and nurturing research talents. Its unique strengths in fundamental and applied research, innovation and entrepreneurship have enabled it to make a significant contribution to the high-quality development of the country. Leveraging PolyU and Huizhou’s advantages and coordinated development, the two parties will jointly establish the Research Institute to deepen their cooperation and further the translation of research outcomes, providing core technology for local industry. The Research Institute will serve as a driving force for the development of the technology industry in Huizhou, thus achieving mutual benefits for all parties. Mr LIU Ji, Secretary of the Huizhou Municipal Committee and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Huizhou Municipal People’s Congress, stated that PolyU possesses first-class innovative talents and strong research capabilities, while Huizhou has a solid modern industrial foundation and broad scenarios for innovation application. The joint establishment of the Research Institute will definitely promote complementary advantages. With a focus on Huizhou’s industrial development, the Research Institute will fully capitalise on PolyU’s talent and research strengths to encourage further incubation and commercialisation of research outcomes in Huizhou, so as to accelerate its contribution to the further growth of Guangdong’s development. The Research Institute will also integrate high-end science and technology innovation resources from the region and abroad to cultivate high-calibre engineers, and innovative and entrepreneurial talents with mastery of key future technologies, to develop the Research Institute into a world-class technology and innovation platform. Witnessed by Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU; Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU; Prof. Wing-tak WONG, Deputy President and Provost of PolyU; Mr LIU Ji, Secretary of the Huizhou Municipal Committee and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Huizhou Municipal People’s Congress; Mr LAI Jianhua, Member of the Standing Committee of the Huizhou Municipal Committee and Head of the United Front Work Department; and Mr LI Ming, Member of the Standing Committee of the Huizhou Municipal Committee and Head of the Organisation Department, the cooperation agreement was signed by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU; Ms LI Junling, Vice Mayor of the Huizhou Municipal Government; and Mr GUO Wupiao, Chairman of the Party Working Committee and Director of the Management Committee of the Daya Bay Development Zone. Other guests included representatives from PolyU and the Huizhou Municipal Government and enterprises. Technological innovation has become a key driver of social development. At the event, Prof. ZHENG Zijian, Chair Professor of Soft Materials and Devices of PolyU, introduced the Research Institute’s development plan. The Research Institute will focus on the fields of petrochemicals, new energy materials, artificial intelligence, and smart manufacturing. Through cooperation with Huizhou and the Daya Bay Development Zone, it will fully leverage the advantages of all parties and implement an innovation-driven development strategy to actively promote industry-university-research collaboration, making contributions to the technological innovation of Hong Kong, Huizhou and the Nation, and creating a new model of government-university collaboration.

Visit by Delegation of Member of the Standing Committee of the Fujian Provincial People's Congress

A delegation led by Mr LI Jianhui, Member of the Standing Committee of the Fujian Provincial People's Congress and Mr Wang Mingyuan, Mayor of Jinjiang Municipal People’s Government, visited the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) on 6 May to exchange views on strengthening cooperation in technology and innovation between Fujian and Hong Kong. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU; Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU; Prof. Wing-tak WONG, Deputy President and Provost of PolyU; Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU, and other representatives from PolyU. Dr LAM stated that as a world-class research-oriented university, PolyU maintains its dedication to focusing on technological innovation and nurturing scientific research talent. He expressed his hope to strengthen collaboration with Quanzhou City, aiming to introduce more globally-renowned technological achievements to be implemented and transformed in the region. This initiative will significantly enhance industrial development and provide innovative drive for the economic and social development of Quanzhou City. Mr LI stated that the PolyU-Jinjiang Technology and Innovation Research Institute (Research Institute) is an important initiative in Fujian Province. The Government is committed to supporting and facilitating the transformation and implementation of the research outcomes. Since the establishment of the Research Institute, both parties have demonstrated strong commitment and exceptional efficiency. Moving forward, PolyU hopes to cooperate with Quanzhou City to jointly establish a comprehensive ecosystem involving with the government, industry, academia, and research institutions, aligning with the major strategic development of Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, and even the nation as a whole.  

Visit by delegation of Hefei government

A delegation led by Hefei Municipal People’s Government Mayor Mr YunFeng LUO visited The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) on 11 April. The delegation was welcomed by Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU; Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Prof. DONG Cheng, Associate Vice President (Mainland Research Advancement) of PolyU. Prof. TENG introduced the latest developments of PolyU to the delegation, as well as its strategic focus on research collaborations with the mainland.  PolyU seeks to make substantial contributions to the economic prosperity of both regions, ultimately supporting the nation in attaining high-quality development. Last October, PolyU and the Hefei Luyang People’s Government reached an MoU to jointly establish the PolyU-Hefei Technology and Innovation Research Institute (the Research Institute), with the aim of fostering in-depth and effective collaboration in industry, academia and research and cultivating talents.  Both parties are now working towards the establishment of the Research Institute, which contributes to enhancing and facilitating research development, academic exchange, nurturing of talent, and knowledge transfer in various fields, including biomedical and sensing precision technology, and aerospace information. Visit by Delegation of Quanzhou Government

A delegation led by the Quanzhou Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology, along with leading industry representatives from the textile and garment, sports footwear and apparel, and new materials sectors, visited PolyU on 11 April. Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU warmly welcomed the delegation. The delegation was guided through a tour of School of Design, the University Research Facility in 3D Printing, and the PolyU-Huawei Joint Laboratory for Optical Interconnection Network and Advanced Computing System, providing an in-depth look at PolyU's achievements in design and scientific innovation. During the meeting, both parties engaged in a thorough discussion on facilitating the practical application of research achievements. PolyU hopes to further strengthen technological collaboration with Fujian government entities and businesses, making a greater contribution to the economic prosperity of both regions.

PolyU and Jiangyin High-tech Zone in Jiangsu Province signed agreement on technology and research collaboration

Professor Christopher Chao, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), led professors from different departments of PolyU to Jiangyin Hi-tech Zone in Jiangsu Province for technology exchange activities in late March. With the support of the Department of Science and Technology of Jiangsu and the Jiangsu Productivity Promotion Center, PolyU and Jiangyin High-tech Zone signed a MoU for technology and research collaboration.  This MoU will further expand the areas of cooperation between Jiangsu and Hong Kong. By enhancing the supply of technological innovation resources, Jiangyin government will support PolyU's innovation projects to be developed and applied in Jiangyin High-tech Zone. They will establish a connection between the technological needs of the enterprises and the research outcomes of PolyU to solve the technical problems faced by these enterprises. Additionally, they will jointly organise technology exchange activities and explore the establishment of technology transfer and R&D platforms, such as joint laboratories, etc. This cooperation enables PolyU and Jiangyin Hi-tech Zone to further explore technological innovation and industrial transformation, injecting new vitality into Jiangsu-Hong Kong cooperation. After the signing ceremony, researchers from different departments of PolyU introduced the latest scientific and technological achievements to representatives of enterprises in Jiangyin District. The discussions covered technology areas such as ultra-precision machining, electric vehicles, microelectronics, biomedicine, new materials, etc. The enterprises showed great interest in these advanced technologies and are looking forward to research collaboration with professors. The delegation has also visited high-tech enterprises in the Jiangyin area, including Exhibition Hall of CITIC Pacific Special Steel Group, Jiangsu Changjiang Electronics Tech, and the Jiangyin Intelligent Manufacturing Innovation Institute to learn about the history and development of different industries while interacting with corporate R&D personnel. In the past few years, PolyU has promoted cooperation in research and education between Jiangsu and Hong Kong which has achieved fruitful results. This exchange activity is a continuation of the cooperation agreement signed by PolyU and the Jiangsu Productivity Promotion Center at the "The 2nd Jiangsu Conference for Industry-University-Research Cooperation and Exchange" last year. The agreement proposed the joint establishment of a technology innovation transfer center to support technology transfer, knowledge exchange activities, and delegations. In mid-April, PolyU will organise a technology exchange event with Jiangsu enterprises. It is anticipated to strengthen communication and understanding between university researchers and enterprises, fostering research collaboration and promote technology transfer. It will also serve as a platform for PolyU researchers to cooperate with enterprises. 

Visit by Delegation of CHINT Group

A delegation led by Mr. NAN Cunhui, Chairman of CHINT Group, visited The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) on April 2 to exchange views on strengthening cooperation in technology and innovation between the two sides. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU, Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Dr Laura LO, Associate Vice President (Institutional Advancement) of PolyU, and exchanged views with the guests during the lunch meeting at Hotel Icon.  After the meeting, Prof. CHAO led the delegation to visit the PolyU campus and related laboratories. The delegation visited the Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Things (RIAIoT), Advanced Materials and Electronics Laboratory, and State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology (SKL-UPMT).  

PolyU and Ganzhou sign strategic collaborative framework agreements to deepen research collaboration between the two regions

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has partnered with Ganzhou Municipal Government and Xingguo County Government in Jiangxi province to capitalise on their strengthens and promote the high-quality development of the textile industry in Ganzhou and Hong Kong. Prof. Christopher CHAO, PolyU Vice President (Research and Innovation), led a delegation to participate in the “1st China (Ganzhou) Graphene cum Textile and Apparel and New Materials Industry Forum” on 19 March in Xingguo County, Ganzhou. At the event, Prof. Chao signed strategic collaborative framework agreement separately with Mr DOU Liangtan, Member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Ganzhou Municipal Committee and Vice Mayor of Ganzhou, and Mr LIU Zhanghong, Deputy Secretary of Xingguo County Party Committee and County Mayor of Xingguo, for the joint establishment of the PolyU-Xingguo Textiles Technology and Innovation Research Institute (the Institute) to promote in-depth and effective industry-university-research collaboration. The Institute will support the innovative development of the textile industry in Ganzhou and its counties, while creating further opportunities for PolyU in terms of education, research and translation of research into innovative outcomes in the field of textiles. Prof. Christopher Chao said, “By putting efforts into brand building, technology promotion, professional training and talent development, PolyU will make contributions to the advancement of the textile industry and market in Ganzhou and Xingguo County. The solicitation of business and projects will also facilitate investment and further collaborative opportunities. We will both fully leverage our respective strengths and join forces to create a new chapter in the textile industry.” PolyU possesses strong educational and research capabilities in the textiles field, which align with the development needs of Ganzhou’s textile industry in the areas of talent cultivation, research, industrial transformation and upgrading. The collaboration between PolyU, Ganzhou and Xingguo County and the establishment of the Institute will leverage the University’s expertise in talent, technology and research platforms, to support the enduring growth of local textile enterprises. The forum themed on “New Weave of New Graphene” gathered experts from universities, enterprises and industry in the fields of graphene and textiles from all over the country, to discuss research and industrial applications of graphene (also known as the King of New Materials). Dr Shou Dahua, Assistant Professor and Limin Endowed Young Scholar in Advanced Textiles Technologies of PolyU School of Fashion and Textiles introduced his research achievements in textiles and new materials at the Forum. On the same day, the country’s first Graphene Technology Museum was inaugurated in Xingguo County, to serve as a national hub for graphene innovation to translate research outcomes into new productive forces.

Visit by Delegation of Quanzhou government

A delegation led by Mr. ZHANG Yigong, the Communist Party Secretary of Quanzhou City, Secretary of Quanzhou Municipal Party Committee; Mr ZHOU Xiaohua, Secretary General of Quanzhou Municipal Party Committee; Mr ZHANG Wenxian, Member of the Standing Committee of Quanzhou Communist Party Committee and Communist Party Secretary of Jinjiang City visited PolyU on 23 March. The delegation was welcomed by Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU; Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU and Prof. Wing-tak WONG, Deputy President and Provost of PolyU.  The PolyU-Jinjiang Technology and Innovation Research Institute (Research Institute) made a successful establishment in Jinjiang in early September last year. Being the first research institute established by PolyU beyond the Greater Bay Area, it has gained significant attention. Thanks to the strong support from various sectors of society, the Research Institute has experienced rapid development. PolyU hopes to leverage the strengths of both parties and to enhance technological collaboration with government entities and businesses. The goal is to foster technological innovation, facilitate the practical application of research findings, and strive for breakthroughs in research achievements. Visit by Delegation of Wenzhou government

On 15 March 2024, a delegation led by Mr. Lu Bojun, Member of the Standing Committee of Wenzhou Communist Party Committee, Head of the Organization Department, and the Director of the Talent Office, visited The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). The delegation was welcomed by the Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU; Dr Miranda LOU, Executive Vice President of PolyU; Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU. The visit aimed at strengthening the communication and cooperation between Wenzhou and PolyU in the recruitment of high-level science, technology and innovation talents, establishing a strategic partnership in talent resource sharing and information exchange, and attracting more PolyU graduates to Wenzhou for employment and starting up business. Wenzhou signed an agreement with PolyU to establish a university talent workstation in PolyU. The two sides had a friendly communication. Prof. CHAO introduced the development of PolyU, the programme setting and the employment situation of graduates. Prof. Benny C. F. CHEUNG, Director of PolyU-Wenzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute (Research Institute), introduced the technical direction, discipline leaders and preparations of the Research Institute to the delegation. Leaders of Wenzhou introduced the situation of Wenzhou city, industry, and talent scheme. In addition, Prof. CHAO and Mr. ZHANG Lei, Director of Wenzhou Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, signed the agreement of the university talent workstation. Mr. Lu conferred the plaque to PolyU. After the meeting, the delegation visited the exhibition showcasing the achievements of the PolyU-Wenzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute in various directions, as well as the Ou embroidery exhibition. 

PolyU to establish research platform in Daya Bay

At the opening ceremony of the Pingshan River innovation and technology corridor, Prof. Wing-tak Wong, Deputy President and Provostof The Hong Kong Polytechnic University revealed that the University will set up a research platform in the Daya Bay Economic and Technological Development Zone to contribute to the development of the corridor.
