Delegation from Shanghai Administration of Sports visited RISports

The delegation led by Mr Luo Wenhua, Deputy Director General of the Shanghai Administration of Sports, and Mr Wang Liqin, former Olympic Table Tennis Gold Medalist & current Director of the Shanghai Elite Sports Training Administration Centre, visited RISports yesterday. Prof. Zhang Ming and his team introduced our research platforms and some ongoing projects.

RISports showcased at the InnoTech Open Day × Alumni Homecoming 2024

The University’s flagship event InnoTech Open Day × Alumni Homecoming 2024 was successfully held on Saturday, attended by over 7,800 alumni and friends. RISports showcased the portable and markerless motion capture technologies and an instrumented treadmill used to measure the dynamic body movements and loads during running. Besides, the 3D foot scan system measured the 3D foot shape and collected foot parameters. Together with the gait analysis, holistic foot assessments can be done for prescribing appropriate shoes and insoles to cater individual needs. Our Director, Prof. Zhang Ming, has also shared the latest projects and development of RISpots at the PAIR InnoTech Forum.

RISports welcomes delegation from Hong Kong Footwear Association and Feng Tai Footwear

Today RISports welcomes delegation led by Mr Eddie Lam, President of Hong Kong Footwear Association and CEO of Feng Tai Footwear. Our two projects about evaluation of sports-footwear microclimate and aerodynamic performance and 3D-printed orthotic insoles were introduced. We look forward to our future collaborations!

RISports helped HK karate team with performance analysis (English only)

Dr Annie Wang, member of RISports and Research Assistant Professor of Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), led a research team to install a new multicamera system at the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) karate studio. The system can do markerless motion capture and performance analysis for karate athletes. It is welcomed by Mr Mohamed Elhosieny Aly, Technical Commission Chairman of World Karate Federation and Chairman of Asian Karate Federation Technical Commission, Mr William Thomas, Head Karatedo Coach of HKSI, and karate referee of Asian countries. They also made suggestions on system optimization and would like encourage other karate organizations to use it.

PolyU delegation visited Loughborough University (English only)

Last month Prof. HC Man (Dean of Faculty of Engineering), Prof. Ming Zhang (RISports Director) and Prof. CY Wen (Associate Director) visited the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences of Loughborough University, which has been ranked number 1 for sport-related subjects for the last eight years in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. It was a fruitful trip to share their experiences in offering sports education programs and explore research collaborations.

PolyU and AquaBloom join forces to nurture sports technology talent and advance industry development

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and AquaBloom International Sports Technology Group Limited (ABSG) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 16-Aug for the establishment of the “Sports Technology Talent and Industry Development Centre”. Witnessed by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Dr Rocky CHENG, Chief Executive Officer of Cyberport, the MoU was signed by Prof. Ming ZHANG, Director of the Research Institute for Sports Science and Technology (RISports), Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Chair Professor of Biomechanics of PolyU and Mr Mike YANG, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of ABSG. This strategic partnership will leverage PolyU research strengths and ABSG industry experience to foster each other’s academic activities and education projects on sports technology.   Besides, Prof. ZHANG also joined the panel discussion at the Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum (DELF) to share the background of this collaboration and incorporation of digital technology in teaching.   Media Release https://polyu.hk/stTGi

Distinguished Sports Research Seminar Series - Wearable Iontronic Devices for Sports and Healthcare Applications

The Distinguished Sports Research Seminar "Wearable Iontronic Devices for Sports and Healthcare Applications" delivered by Prof. Tingrui PAN, Chair Professor of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and the Executive Director of Institute for Innovative Medical Devices, organised by RISports and jointly co-organised by the Department of Biomedical Engineering, the PolyU - Samaranch Sports Development Centre and the PolyU - HKSI Research Centre was successfully held yesterday. This seminar attracted over 50 PolyU staff and students to share Prof. Pan's research findings in iontronic sensors.

Prof. Zhang Ming spoke at the 11th WACBE World Congress on Bioengineering (WACBE 2024)

The 11th WACBE World Congress on Bioengineering (WACBE 2024) organised by the World Association for Chinese Biomedical Engineers (WACBE), and hosted by the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) was held on 4-7 August 2024. It gathered over 470 Chinese biomedical engineers from around the world to have in-depth discussion. At the congress, our director Prof. Zhang Ming spoke in the plenary session on the topic "Biomedical Engineering in Sports Science" and introduced some major projects of RISports.
