Biography

Prof. Zhang received the BSc in automation control engineering, MSc in mechanical engineering, from Beijing Institute of Technology in 1982 and 1987, and PhD in medical engineering from King’s College, University of London in 1995. He currently is Chair Professor in Biomechanics, Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Director of Research Institute for Sports Science and Technology (RISports). Prof Zhang is Councilor of World Council of Biomechanics (WCB), past President of World Association for Chinese Biomedical Engineers (WACBE), funding Chair of Chinese Society of Rehabilitation Engineering under both Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering and Chinese Rehabilitation Devices Association, Committee member of Chinese Society of Biomechanics, Committee member and fellow of Biomedical Division of Hong Kong Institute of Engineers, and Standing Council Member of Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering and Vice President of China Rehabilitation Devices Association. He serves as Proposal Selection Panel Member for NSFC China and Hong Kong Research Grant Council. He also serves as editorial board number for a few journals and chaired a number of conferences.

He has published more than 500 journal papers and book chapters. Prof Zhang has won a number of international awards, including the Natural Science Award (First-class) of 2015 Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards by the Ministry of Education, and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University President’s Awards for Excellent Performance/Achievement in Research and Scholarly Activities 2016.

Research Interests

  • computational modelling and simulation, prosthetics and orthotics bioengineering, skin and soft tissue mechanics, skin friction, foot biomechanics and footwear design, gait analysis, material properties of biomaterials and interfacial materials, bone biomechanics, osteoporosis, sleeping support, sports science and technology etc.
