Discipline: Product Design
Student: CHIU Sin Ting (Charis)
Internship Company: Hyacinth Corporation Limited, Hong Kong
“Having the opportunity to engage with a vendor has been an exceptional experience.” – Charis CHIU
Charis began her internship as a concept and product design intern at Hyacinth Corporation Limited, which specializes in designing toys for clients in the toy industry. Her goals were to 1) learn about toy design, development, and production, 2) learn about different materials and mechanisms, and 3) learn problem-solving skills.
Learning Goals and Outcomes
During her internship, Charis gained hands-on experience by participating in design research and analysis, as well as toy design and development. Through communication with vendors, she learned about materials and mechanisms that were unfamiliar to her as a beginner in the field of toy design and production.
In addition, Charis was assigned to design engaging and visually appealing booklets on toys for customers. During this assignment, she learned how to design graphic layouts for booklets and gained experience in revising designs to make them workable and in solving problems on her own.
Internship Outputs and Amazing Experiences
Charis found that her internship not only enriched her understanding of the design and production process but also allowed her to tap into vendors’ knowledge and expertise. This collaborative exchange substantially contributed to her growth as a product designer.
Overall, the internship experience was invaluable for Charis, as it allowed her to apply her skills in a workplace environment and gain valuable insights into the distinctions between school and the workplace. Charis’s workplace supervisor appreciated her excellent performance, noting her excellent responsiveness and strong communication skills.
