Elaborations on the General Principles
- Demonstrate Commitment to Work
A staff member should:
(a) assume accountability for any work that he/she is assigned to perform;
(b) carry out his/her work to the best of his/her ability, with due care and diligence;
(c) be concerned with the efficiency and effectiveness of his/her work and should not do anything to jeopardise his/her work performance or that of his/her colleagues;
(d) take reasonable care at work for his/her own health and safety and that of all other persons who may be affected by his/her act or omission.
- Be Impartial and Fair
A staff member should:
(a) perform his/her duties in an impartial and equitable manner;
(b) avoid favouritism in the conduct of his/her duties;
(c) take credit only for the work actually done by himself/herself and give recognition to the contributions made by others;
(d) not promote or engage in any discriminatory conduct such as on the basis of age, colour, creed, disability, family status, gender, language, nationality, place of origin, political belief, pregnancy, race, religion or sexual orientation.
- Act with Integrity and Honesty
A staff member should NOT:
(a) provide false or misleading information, withhold necessary or useful information, or falsify any documents;
(b) participate in or be associated with dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation;
(c) abuse his/her authority or power;
(d) use the resources of the University for unauthorized purposes;
(e) engage in any conduct or activities which may adversely affect the University’s operation or may bring the University into disrepute.
- Avoid and Declare Conflict of Interest
A staff member should:
(a) distinguish clearly between statements and actions made as a private individual and those made in his/her capacity as a staff member of the University;
(b) not hold, assume or accept an external position which may conflict with his/her employment and responsibilities unless that interest has been fully disclosed and written approval has been obtained in advance from the relevant authority.
- Manage Confidential Information Properly
A staff member should properly manage confidential information obtained in the course of his/her employment. Confidential information includes, but is not limited to:
(a) information included in documents marked "confidential";
(b) information which the staff member is informed to be confidential;
(c) personal data of any staff members, students and/or any other individuals;
(d) information which has been given to the University, its staff members or students in confidence by other persons.
- Respect Others
A staff member should:
(a) treat everyone with respect, courtesy and fairness;
(b) have regard to the human rights, freedom and privacy of individuals, and avoid any actions that adversely affect such rights;
(c) address differing opinions, cultures and customs with civility and in an appropriate manner;
(d) not incite hatred or bigotry;
(e) not intimidate or harass, sexually or otherwise, any person;
(f) not maliciously damage the personal or professional reputation or career prospects of colleagues, superiors or subordinates;
(g) not engage in any conduct or activity which humiliates, insults or threatens others, e.g. physical violence, abusive conduct, offensive language or malicious comments.
