Dr Lam is the co-founder of Grand Rise Technology Limited, a PolyU academic-led startup, which he founded in 2019 with Prof. Pei Li of the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology. The company has developed a novel bio-based technology based on a patented core-shell particle technology platform. This enables a new class of amphiphilic core-shell nanoparticles for a wide range of applications such as a bio-based anti-microbial coating and an edible coating that extends the shelf life of food. The team puts a strong emphasis on translating research excellence into real-world applications for the benefit of society.

The start-up’s dedication to research and development has earned it both investor support and industry recognition. Grand Rise Technology has received a total investment of HK$4.5 million from angel investors HKx and Beyond Venture, and was able to successfully match this funding from the PolyU Tech Launchpad Fund (TLF) Scheme.

With the support of Dr Lam’s family chemical business in China, the team has R&D offices in Hong Kong Science and Technology Park and the PolyU InnoHub, and manufacturing facilities in Qingyuan, China.

Dr Lam is currently an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at PolyU KTEO, mentoring PolyU startups. He also served on the Executive Committee – Technology Transfer Support of the PolyU KTEO CEO Club in 2022-23.

Since 2021, Dr Lam and his team have received a number of recognitions and awards from industry, including a Gold Medal at the 2021 Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions, and the Innopreneur Award of Excellence in Research Application from the Federation of Hong Kong Industries in February 2023.
