Today’s construction management is often reactive to progress delays or safety accidents due to lack of automated project data collection, communication and distribution of important information. The Proactive Construction Management System (PCMS) enhances the capacities of the construction team with respect to progress and safety management. Our research proposes an extension of the BBS approach, proactive behavior-based safety (PBBS), to improve construction safety. PBBS integrates the theory of BBS with the technology of PCMS. The experimental results showed that PCMS performed well in construction accident prevention and the Safety Index (SI) of the two project teams, with increased improvements by 36.07% and 44.70% respectively.
From 2014 to 2016, more than 10 construction projects have used the PCMS on a trial basis, including housing, slope and tunnel projects. All users, including clients and contractors, are satisfied with the trial results and hope this technology could be used in more construction projects.
The user benefits include: a) decreased safety incident possibilities by immediately alerting site workers to safety hazards, b) rapid incident response from managers by immediately locating where an incident happens, c) incident cause analysis using track records, d) immediate grasp of construction resources, e) daily safety reports to safety officers, and f) improved construction safety culture.
