Welcome to the Faculty of Construction and Environment (FCE) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. We have a long tradition of providing higher education in various disciplines related to the construction field. Organised into four departments with the distinct themes of Building Environment and Energy Engineering (BEEE), Building and Real Estate (BRE), Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), and Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics (LSGI), the Faculty has over a hundred academic staff at Assistant Professor and above levels, whose expertise spans a range of areas in sustainable urban development and smart cities, including construction, energy, environment, urban hazards mitigation, and urban informatics.

FCE is the key provider of higher education for the Hong Kong construction industry. Virtually all aspects of construction from land surveying to building and civil engineering design, to actual construction and its management, to repair, refurbishment as well as the operation and management of built facilities are covered by the Faculty's programmes and our research activities. Our undergraduate programmes are highly relevant for students aspiring to careers in professions like construction management, building services engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, and land surveying etc. Most of our programmes have received formal recognition from professional bodies in the construction industry. We also offer a variety of taught MSc/PgD programmes in addition to research-based PhD/MPhil programmes for those seeking professional advancement or a strong foundation on which to build an academic career. Moreover, FCE has admitted over 35 research students supported by the prestigious Hong Kong PhD Fellowships from 2020 to 2024.

In the 2024 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, PolyU was ranked the 65th best university in the world and the 23rd best in Asia. In the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject in 2024, FCE was well represented with the disciplines of Architecture and Built Environment as well as Civil and Structural Engineering both in the 14th place worldwide (2nd and 1st in Hong Kong respectively), and Environmental Sciences in the 46th place (2nd in Hong Kong). With the financial support of major funding schemes of the Hong Kong Research Grants Council and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, not only is our research internationally recognised, it is also making an impact in the communities that we serve. By addressing real-world problems, we hope our research will bring about practical benefits for the city of Hong Kong and beyond.

With numerous state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories, including two branches of the Chinese National Engineering Research Centres established by the State Ministry of Science and Technology and a Joint Laboratory of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area for the Environment established by PolyU and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, we are well positioned to play a leading role in the field of construction and environment. As evidenced by our success in securing competitive funding from the General Research Fund of the Hong Kong Research Grants Council, we are known for having the largest concentration of research expertise in Hong Kong in construction and environment-related disciplines. Many of our esteemed academics also play pivotal roles in PolyU’s high-impact research by leading an array of interdisciplinary research institutes at the university level to provide transformative solutions to significant societal challenges.
