Dr Ivan Ho, Department of Electronic and Information Engineering and his research student, Mr Yuhao Wang, work together with Prof. Yuhong Wang and his group at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering to develop the smart integrated road pavement and drainage IoT system for stormwater storage, de-icing, dust suppression, and cooling. This system won the Gold Medal with The Organizer’s Choice Award and the Toronto International Society of Innovation & Advanced Skills (TISIAS) Special Award in the 5th International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN 2020), Toronto, Canada. The invention is a paradigm shift in urban road construction. Through innovative pavement textures and features, the system directs stormwater to storage tanks for flood mitigation and pollutant removal. A reverse flow subsystem uses the stored water to suppress dust and cool road in hot weather. In cold weather, the system can store, apply, and recycle anti-freezing agents for de-icing. Water level and quality data are collected by various sensors and uploaded to the cloud for centralized monitoring, analysis, and automatic control.
