From Classroom to Conference: BAEAL Students Present Research at BAAL 2024

ENGL students Nicole Wang and Ivy Wang, both from the BA (Hons) in English and Applied Linguistics (BAEAL) programme, represented the Department by presenting their research at the 57th Annual Conference of the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL 2024). The conference occurred at the University of Essex, The United Kingdom, from 5 – 7 September 2024. Below is Nicole's reflection on her experience at this conference.
"Attending the BAAL conference in September 2024 was undoubtedly a highlight of my university life. From the moment our abstract, "Unveiling lesbian identities in mainland China's online dating: content analysis on self and ideal partner portrayal in Douban posts," was accepted, a dream-like idea became something to look forward to with excitement. Presenting our research project and receiving insightful feedback from esteemed scholars was especially memorable. The insights and inspirations we gained from keynote sessions, colloquiums, and presentations were invaluable, providing us with new ideas to explore. The warmth and enthusiasm of everyone we connected with was inspirational as well. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and the wonderful memories made in Colchester."
