Sharing by a Minor in Chinese Language and Culture student

Coming to Hong Kong to pursue my study was one of the best decisions that I have made in my life so far. Not that I could learn so much from high quality learning experiences in PolyU but I was exposed to the “Hong Kong atmosphere” which includes friends with local language and culture. Soon after I came to Hong Kong, I wanted to learn more about the local language and culture which motivated me to apply to “Minor in Chinese Language and Culture”.

This Minor program is led by Dr. Yuen and I believe that he is one of the most enjoyable professors I met in PolyU. He makes learning more enjoyable with his jolly tones and friendly gestures that makes us feel closer. I took elementary Cantonese class taught by him and even though it was my first time to learn Cantonese, I enjoyed so much for the whole semester.

Regarding the Minor programme itself, this programme is well structured with language subjects and culture subjects. Two types of subjects have different characteristics and contents but at the same time, they are closely related to each other because culture is made by people who speak same language and language is influenced by culture. I believe that everyone who wishes to join this Minor programme will be given enough opportunities to learn both language and culture and be ready to be absorbed to local culture as soon as possible (e.g. make more local friends).
