Fourth Steering Committee Meeting on Making Cities Resilient Campaign

The Making Cities Resilient: “My City is getting ready!” Campaign, launched in May 2010, has raised awareness and the political profile of disaster risk reduction and resilience among cities, creating a broad alliance for dialogue and developing basic tools to guide the capacity development and implementation of resilient cities.

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction held the campaign’s Fourth Steering Committee Meeting in Hong Kong on 11-12 October 2017. Members of the Committee, comprising representatives of local and national governments, international agencies, donors, private sector organisations, regional networks, academic institutions and technical organisations, discussed how it will support and guide the implementation and monitoring of the Making Cities Resilient Alliance in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

Invited to discuss disaster risk reduction efforts originating in Hong Kong were Prof. Maurice Yap and Dr Timothy Sim representing PolyU; Mr KL Lee, Acting Senior Scientific Officer at the Hong Kong Observatory; and Dr Liu Shao-haei, Deputising Director (Quality and Safety), Quality and Safety Division, Hospital Authority. Following the meeting, the Committee visited the Hong Kong Observatory to learn about its work and how it is helping to enhance Hong Kong’s resilience to extreme weather.
