High-efficiency Copper Indium Gallium Diselenide (CIGS) thin-film solar cells have been installed on the rooftop of the covered walkway on the Podium to effectively convert solar energy into electricity. The output of CIGS solar cells on a clear sunny day provides enough electricity to run 340 walkway lights and saves up to 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents greenhouse gas emissions annually. This is equivalent to the planting of 400 trees of at least 5 meters each in height.
With this arrangement, the covered walkway on the Podium not only protects our students and staff from the rain and the sun, but also helps reinforce PolyU’s commitment to sustainability.
