Campus Greenery - Bauhinia blakeana (洋紫荊)

This species is a hybrid between Bauhinia purpurea and Bauhinia variegata. Flowering occurs from late October to March and displays beautifully as orchid-like bloom. The flower was adopted as the floral emblem of Hong Kong in 1965 from a list of 13 species of locally grown flowers. Since 1997 it appears on Hong Kong’s coins and its flag.
