Dr. HUNG wing-tat from PolyU Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering together with his research team proposed in their research report to replace 100 electric buses and public light buses within two years with more efficient installations. The proposal requires a funding of 340 million Hong Kong dollars which can reduce particulates by 17%, nitrogen oxide by 10% and improve roadside air quality in Hong Kong.
Major obstacles on introduction and operation of electric buses in Hong Kong include unstable performance of electric buses, inadequate charging facilities for electric buses and high capital cost on the purchase of electric buses. The research team suggested setting up a platform in which the Government, bus and public light bus operators, electricity supplier, electric vehicle battery experts and electric vehicle experts can collaborate to promote electrification of buses and public light buses.
