To echo the World Environment Day (WED) and World Oceans Day (WOD), PolyU organized a series of activities for staff and students from 5 to 8 June 2017. These include a lunch sharing session on Hong Kong’s biodiversity, ‘Bottle-to-Gift Exchange’ activity and ‘No Straw Day’ event at catering outlets.
With the topic of ‘Oases amidst concrete - exploring urban ecology of Hong Kong’, the invited speaker explored into the various precious species within Hong Kong’s borders and explained to the audience the natural environment of Hong Kong. Students and staff were encouraged to think about what they can do for the environment.
The ‘Bottle-to-Gift Exchange’ activity took place on 6 and 7 June 2017. Staff and students received herb seedlings and utensils made from dao straw fibre when they handed over their clean plastic beverage bottles. This two-day activity has attracted the attention all over the campus on developing a clean recycling habit.
Several catering outlets on campus joined the ‘No Straw Day’ on 8 June 2017 and only provided straws upon request. It was a wake-up call to reducing plastic waste on campus.
