A recent research by PolyU’s School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) suggests that gaining employees’ support is key to ensuring success in implementing an environmental management system in a hotel. Hotels need to understand that sometimes employees may be resistant to changes in their ‘routine and habitual operations’, and it is particularly important to build their willingness to support the introduction of any environmental programme.
PolyU researchers conducted a survey at ten international tourist hotels in Hong Kong. Hotel employees were asked about their environmental knowledge, awareness and concern, ecological behavior and demographic characteristics. The survey results revealed that employees with higher levels of environmental knowledge also showed greater environmental awareness and concern, and were more likely to implement green practices.
It was suggested that hotels should provide the right training to ensure employees at all levels are informed and aware of how ecological behavior can help their hotel, the environment and themselves, and provide appropriate incentives to motivate them to participate.
