World Environment Day (WED) encourages worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment, and is celebrated on 5 June every year. Since it began in 1974, it has been a flagship campaign on emerging environmental issues such as marine pollution, global warming, and sustainable consumption. It has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. India is the global host of 2018 World Environment Day.
Each year, World Environment Day has a new theme that focuses attention on a particularly pressing environmental concern. The theme for 2018 is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. By choosing this theme, it is aimed that people around the globe may strive to change their everyday habits and reduce their over-reliance on single-use plastics and disposables.
