HONG KONG RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF TEXTILES AND APPAREL

HONG KONG RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF TEXTILES AND APPAREL was established by the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region with the Innovation and Technology Fund to promote innovation and technology upgrading in manufacturing and service industries with a view to enhancing Hong Kong’s economic development. One important step forward for ITF is to establish R&D centres in specific focus areas to enhance the competitiveness of concerned industries.

With an indicative funding support of HK$275m from ITF, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University will be hosting the Institute to support the continual development of technologies to enhance the competitiveness of the textile and clothing industry.

The Institute, as an independent organization operating under the auspices of PolyU, aims to expand the frontiers of knowledge and expertise by facilitating research and development on textile and clothing related technologies through the synergistic collaboration of industry, research institutes and academia. The vision of the Institute is to be a world-leading organization of excellence in research, development and technology transfer in fashion and textile technologies. With funding contribution and support from the industry, the Institute will manage a total research funding in the vicinity of HK$360m over a period of 5 years. Reviews would be conducted within the period to assess its performance and to form input to future considerations as to whether the Institute should continue to receive further funding from ITF.

A Board of Directors comprising members from the textiles and clothing industry, research institutes and government officials will oversee the direction of the Institute and recommend projects for further pursuance with the industry and research institutes. The Institute is to provide the necessary support to this Board, notably in gathering market and technology intelligence, advising on R & D priorities, project management and reporting, and commercialisation of project deliverables.
