Chinese New Year Greetings & Laboratory Safety Reminder

Wish you a Healthy and Safe Year of the Snake! As the holidays draw near, please remember these essential safety measures before leaving the laboratory: 1.  Update Emergency Contacts: Ensure the emergency contact information on your lab door is up-to-date. 2.  Pre-Holiday Checklist for all laboratory personnel:  Shut off and secure all gas cylinders and lines; Do not leave experiments unattended; Close fume cupboard sashes completely; Ensure backup power, gases, and water for critical equipment; Turn off and unplug non-essential equipment, if possible; and Lock doors to prevent unauthorized access to laboratory areas.

PolyU recognised in the 23rd Hong Kong Occupational Safety & Health Award

PolyU was honoured with the Safety Performance Award (All Industries Category) for the ninth consecutive year, recognising its outstanding workplace safety initiatives. It also received the OSH Promotion Award (Distinction) for its efforts in advancing OSH standards through promotional activities. These awards were presented at the 23rd Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Award Forum and Award Presentation Ceremony on 24 October 2024.

PolyU Participated in the 1st OSH Innovation & Technology Expo

On 7 and 8 March, the Industrial Centre, Campus Facilities and Sustainability Office and Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics of PolyU participated in Hong Kong’s first “Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Innovation and Technology Expo” to exchange views with experts and innovators on OSH advances. The Industrial Centre showcased the legged robot used in the inspection of chemical laboratory leakage and the self-directed virtual reality (VR) safety training module. Another exhibition introduced the innovative technologies adopted by the Campus Facilities and Sustainability Office in the campus preventive maintenance program. Developed and introduced by our Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, these technologies help identify debonding tiles through a more scientific and systematic approach to prevent them from falling. While wishing you a joyful holiday, the Health & Safety Office would like to remind all laboratory personnel of the following: Ensure the emergency contact displayed on your laboratory door is up-to-date. Before leaving the laboratory, please check the area and ensure that: All gas cylinders and gas lines have been shut off and secured; No unattended experiments; Sashes of fume cupboards have been closed completely; There is an adequate supply of back-up power, gas(es) and water to critical equipment to avoid interruption; Non-essential equipment has been switched off and unplugged, if possible, and Doors are locked to prevent unauthorized entry to laboratory areas.

Appreciation for lifesaving actions

Mr. Simon Wong, Vice President (Campus Development and Facilities), expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Mr. Pang and Ms. Po, Customer Service Attendants from Hong Yip Service Company Limited, for their lifesaving and heroic actions. The two staff demonstrated courage and composure by swiftly applying CPR and AED skills to save the life of a staff member who had suffered a cardiac arrest last November at Block X Sports Centre. Mr. Wong appreciated their selfless actions and reiterated that Safety is Everyone's Responsibility. AEDs are designed to be simple to use by the general public (lay responders), they are also an important part of responding to a cardiac arrest. Currently, the University has placed more than 20 fully automatic AEDs on various campus locations to enhance the emergency preparedness of the community.

The 22nd Hong Kong OSH Award – Safety Performance Award (All Industries Category)

PolyU won the Safety Performance Award (All Industries Category) for the eighth consecutive year in recognition of the University’s exemplary efforts of workplace safety promotion. The Award was presented at the 22nd Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Award Forum cum Award Presentation Ceremony held in November 2023. Let’s continue to build a positive safety culture in the University.
