Three multidisciplinary conferences have previously been organized by the UNESCO Chair "Culture and Wine Traditions" of the University of Burgundy. They have shown the richness and the large diversity of viticulture and the diet of European countries, with special focuses on wine, nutrition, food and health. The School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is pleased to announce that, in collaboration with the University of Burgundy, the first-ever International Conference on Wine Market and Cultures of Consumption will be held on 2-5 June 2019 in Hong Kong SAR. This international conference aims at providing a platform for the wine industry practitioners, critics and journalists, policy makers, academics and students to exchange views and discuss current issues in wine trade, with a particular focus on sales and marketing of wine and the cultures of wine consumption especially in Asia, where the largest wine importers reside.
From 2008 when the wine import tax was eliminated, Hong Kong has become one of the main hubs of wine markets in the world. The Chinese mainland, currently the essential focal point of an exponential development of fine wine transactions and purchases has become the essential place for the continent's premium wine trade and consumption. Consequently, Hong Kong is an appropriate place to devote an in-depth academic reflection on the wine markets and consumption within Asia in general and China in particular.
